Use Common Household Objects in Defense Against Burglars

Confronting a burglar (or trespasser) in your house can be a frightening experience but the law allows you to defend yourself and your property within reason. This article will teach you how to use ordinary household and garden objects as weapons of self defense.

Steps

  1. Swing a Baseball Bat in Style. These items can be used for defense by swinging them (like the players in the aforementioned sports) and use them to try to knock people down or stun them.
  2. Buy the Right Helmet. There are 2 things you can do with these. One is to wear the helmet and headbutt the burglar. The other is to hold them in your hand and swing them.
  3. Garden hose tubing: Garden hoses can be used if you tie a knot in it and set it around your hand and it makes your punches harder.
  4. Bed sheet/Duvet: Bedsheets and Duvets can be used to temporarily blind and distract the assailant by throwing it over their head.
  5. Perfume, deodorant, antiperspirant or hair spray can be used like mace by spraying it into the trespassers eyes.
  6. Fight back with a glass bottle. A glass bottle can be used by smashing it over the trespasser's head to cause pain and give you time to find a means of restraint.
  7. Use a belt like a whip, by either holding the 2 ends together and hitting with the leather or by swinging the belt buckle end. The latter method causes more pain but is slower to be able to swing again. It is also an effective method of restraint.
  8. Use a Paintball Gun. A loaded paintball fired at close range causes a lot of pain and a strategically placed shot to the groin can incapacitate the trespasser.(NEVER aim above the shoulders unless you want to possibly get in trouble with the police.)
  9. Use a BB gun/Air rifle. BB guns and air rifles look a lot like real guns to the untrained eye and should be able to persuade an inexperienced burglar to flee or surrender. If the burglar is not buying it (i.e he knows it's not a real gun) then use them same way as the paintball gun.
  10. Try using a sliced lemon. A sliced lemon should be used to squeeze citric acid into a trespasser's eyes which should blind them and give you some time.
  11. Pepper can be used to blind an assailant as well.
  12. Use shoes with wooden soles as a weapon. Slip them over your hand and use to punch. If the shoe is a tall lady's one then you can hold the leather and swing it.
  13. Use a cattle prod with caution. A cattle prod can be used to shock people into submission. However it should NEVER be used unless you fear for your life. If you do need to use it aim for the limbs or abdomen, never aim at the torso or head.
  14. Consider using a small hole puncher. A small hole punch can be slipped over your hand and used like makeshift knuckledusters. Make sure the lower bit is on the flat of your fist as this is far less painful to you than placing them on your knuckles.
  15. Try to distract the intruder with fruit juice (Preferably apple juice.) can be used if you take a swig and hold it in your mouth. When needed, spit it as hard as you can into the trespasser's face which will either temporarily blind or distract the trespasser as well as freak him out.
  16. Consider using a pressure washer as a firing weapon. Firing water at high speed from a pressure washer at the trespasser is a good tactic because it hurts and it distracts along with temporary blinding if fired at the face.
  17. Use a telephone as a possible weapon. Use the handset by having it held in the hand and swung downwards to make a good bludgeon but this will probably break the phone.

Tips

  • If your life has been threatened, or your life is in danger, the law should be the last thing on your mind (also the law will rule with you, not the assailant, if you are telling the truth). Use any means necessary.
  • Do not be afraid to fight dirty (e.g. A 2x4 to the groin or attacking from behind).
  • Try not to cause life-threatening injuries or continue attacking out of malice. Just do enough to subdue and restrain the trespasser.
  • Make sure you also have a back-up method of defense if you lose or can't get to your 1st choice weapon.
  • When the police come around, tell them exactly what happened to the very last detail.
  • If you are able to, try to discreetly and quietly phone the police before confronting the burglar.
  • After you have subdued the trespasser, tell them "I am making a citizens arrest"
  • Only use the pressure washer outside (unless you want soaking wet carpets).
  • If you are face to face with someone then chose your method of defense quickly and get to it as fast as you can.
  • Where it says pepper, just use that and not pepper spray, as this may be illegal.
  • If you have a projectile gun and the burglar doesn't know you're there, try to threaten him into surrender with phrases like "I have a clear shot at your head" or "Drop everything and get on the ground or I will shoot" and (if you can) cock the gun so it sounds like it's a real gun and you have just loaded it.
  • If you practice, a screwdriver can be used quite effectively as a throwing knife for distances up to {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}}.

Warnings

  • Beware the trespasser may be a competent fighter himself, so be wary
  • You must not use the cattle prod and the pressure washer in combination because you're more likely to shock yourself due to the water vapor that comes after a pressure washer blast which could cause a short circuit
  • UK law states you can use whatever means necessary to knock out or subdue the assailant. Once the person is knocked out or restrained, do not continue attacking.
  • Don't attack if the person has a gun or a knife unless you have the element of surprise and are a strong, trained competent fighter
  • Do not use strangulation with an object as a method of defense since it can cause death and the police don't look too kindly on it
  • Don't throw anyone through a window as this will be considered by the police as more than acceptable reasonable force and may end up with you being arrested not to mention that your insurance probably won't pay up due to the reason which broke the window
  • Do not use a stun gun as these are illegal in the UK. You will be arrested by (quite likely to be) armed police and fined and/or put in prison if found guilty
