Use Transmilenio in Bogotá

TransMilenio is a public transportation system in Bogotá, the capitol of Colombia. TransMilenio is like a metro system, but with long buses. The buses run on dedicated lanes from one station to another. TransMilenio is an extremely efficient, pleasant and safe way to get around in a crowded and often chaotic city of Bogotá. Even though the whole TransMilenio system currently has only eight lines, and the possibility of getting lost is very small, there are certain things that are good to know when using it, whether you are a visitor or local.

Steps

  1. Get your hands on the TransMilenio guidebook that is available in the major stations. The guidebook is only Spanish, so if you don't understand it, consult your dictionary.
  2. Locate yourself from the city map or from the map with the TransMilenio guidebook.
  3. From the same map locate your destination and the closest station.
  4. Find your way to the closest station.
  5. Check your guidebook at each station to find out which lines stop there.

Warnings

  • Keep your bag in front of you, especially if the bus is very crowded.
  • Keep an eye out for pickpockets.
