Use a Glowstick

Glow sticks are fun to play with when used properly. They offer hours of light and entertainment. They're also excellent to use for a light source in an emergency, such as a power cut or electricity outage.

Steps

  1. Unwrap the glowstick from the packaging. Rip open the package from the opening tab on the top.
  2. Crack the glowstick. Hold it horizontally and grab the left side with your left hand and the right side with your right hand. Bend it so both hands bring it downwards. You will hear a crack.
  3. Shake the glowstick. This mixes all the chemicals that originally were separated by the glass. Crack it a little more to make sure everything gets out of the inner glass tube.
  4. Play with it. There's an endless list of things you can do with it. Hang it from a nail on your wall to use like a torch and don't turn on your lights to save electricity (you can use multiple ones). Twirl it really fast to create a blur. Throw it up in the air and catch it. It should be going for about 8 hours.

Tips

  • Some glowsticks come with connector pieces that allow you to connect the two sides of a glowstick to make a bracelet, or even to connect several and make a hoop.
  • To make them glow brighter, but for less time, speed up the reaction by running them under hot tap water.
  • Glow sticks are great as emergency lighting in the event that you have been hit by a natural disaster, civil disturbance, war; anything that will cause power loss. Glowsticks are also especially useful if you are in a situation where you cannot use candles at a risk of your safety, eg: a gas leak.
  • Try out different colored glowsticks.
  • To make it last longer, put it in the freezer during daytime. Note: This will make it glow less brightly.

Warnings

  • Don't bend the rope glowstick over and over; doing this will cause the chemicals to ooze out.
  • Do not break open the glowstick itself. While the glow stick's chemicals are almost always nontoxic, the liquid stains clothing and carpeting easily, and is a pain to clean up. Also, it has a very strong, acrid smell.
