Wave Your Hair With a Straight Iron

This article is about how to wave your hair with a straight iron, in just a few easy steps.

Steps

  1. Wash and dry your hair thoroughly. Turn your straightener on, and wait a few minutes for it to warm up. For thinner hair, you want a lower temperature if you have a straightener that can adjust to certain temperatures. For thicker, more coarse hair, use straightener at a higher temperature. Add some straightening lotion/heat protection before you begin but make sure hair is fully dried.
  2. Blow-dry your hair before you straighten your hair. It damages it very badly if it's wet.
  3. Meanwhile, separate your hair into small sections (about 1" sections should do.
  4. Grab your straightener and the 1" section and clamp either the middle or top part of your section and twist the straightener so that it is wrapped around your hair.
  5. Hold this for about 10 seconds (depending on the thickness and repeat in different areas of your hair. You don't have to curl the bottom hairs just make sure it's curled in to make your hair look longer.
  6. Apply hairspray if needed and let set.
  7. If this doesn't work properly you can also plait different sections of your hair and straighten the plaits. Once you take the plaits out you will have natural wavy hair.
  8. Finished.

Tips

  • Don't burn your hair!
  • Get to know your straightener and your hair type-thinner finer hair should get a smaller straightener for a wavier look. Coarser or thicker hair should try a medium size. Experiment and have fun!
  • Try doing some-not all of your hair with this technique. Some variances with straight and waves adds visual interest.

Warnings

  • Be sure not to keep the straightener on your hair too long, for it can and WILL burn hair if left on too long.
  • Use caution with straight irons, they become very hot!
  • They may look like hickeys if burned on the neck! OUCH!
