Win a Coin Toss

This shows various ways to win a coin toss every time.

Steps

Adjustment Method

  1. Find someone who wants to settle an argument with a coin toss.
  2. Tell them to call which side they want in the air.
  3. Throw the coin up into the air and wait for them to say a side.
  4. Catch it in your hand when it comes back down.
  5. Feel the coin with your thumb. Tails always has a rough edge while heads has a smoother edge. If you want tails, make sure you can feel the smooth edge so that when you flip it down, heads will be face down on your other hand.

Counting Method

This technique may take some time to get used to, but is extremely effective.

  1. Ask the person to call their side before you throw
  2. Put the heads side facing upwards
  3. Flip the coin and count in your head how many times it spins
  4. If the number is even, catch the coin one-handed. If it is odd, catch it with both hands and shift the coin to your right before opening them.

Spin Method

  1. Ask the person to call which side they want before you throw.
  2. Make sure that the side you want is face up.
  3. Throw the coin into the air but keep it level and spin it. If you have spun fast enough, the coin will remain level in the air and come back down on the same side (the effect is like a Frisbee, which remains level in the air if you spin it).

Double Sided Coin

  1. Find 2 double sided coins (one with both heads and one with both tails).
  2. Hold both coins together in your hand and show your friend (Don't let them to hold the coins or they will come apart). Hold the coins with your thumb and index finger on the edges so that your friend cannot see them. Bear in mind that the heads and tails sides of a coin will both appear right-side-up if you turn the coin horizontally, but when turned vertically, one side goes upside-down. Do not allow them to inspect enough to discover your secret.
  3. Ask them which side they want then either palm the one they picked or put it in your pocket when they aren't looking.

Tricky Method

  1. Say "Heads I win, tails you lose." Do it quick, so the other person doesn't realize what you just said. Don't do it twice though. This method works best when your opponent feels that the coin toss needs to be completed quickly.

Tips

  • Don't settle arguments with coin tosses. If you find someone who does, laugh at them and walk away, because you've already won the argument.
  • Try and predict. If the coin has landed on one side twice in a row, pick the other side. If the coin lands three times, pick the same side. Whatever side you pick, pick that side twice in a row. It's kinda hard, but just practice using probability to your advantage.
