Win in a Sprinting Race

Achieving first place in a track & field sprint requires not only being faster than other competitors. Other things are required for you to receive the gold medal.

Steps

  1. Train hard mentally and physically. The worst thing that could happen to even the fastest runner is when he or she suddenly feels less confident, is stressed out, gets out of control, etc. As well as jogging and stretching daily, sleeping well, and eating good food, try exercising your mental aspects by meditating, viewing appropriate media, socializing more, etc.
  2. Before, during, and after a race, have good sportsmanship. Treat others the way you want to be treated.
  3. Set yourself up in a good position at the starting line so you can start ahead of the others. See how to position your body in the Tips section below.
  4. While running, stay focused at what's ahead of you (the remaining distance and the finish line). Swing your arms hard, directly forward and back, enough to give yourself momentum. Move your legs fast and far apart. If you look towards the audience/onlookers or anyone behind you, you will lose your focus on what's ahead of you.
  5. After you cross the finish line, first place or not, don't stop all of a sudden. You may accidentally get hit by anyone that may be behind you, or you would injure your legs from "braking" too fast. Gradually slow down once you pass the finish line, from a run, to a jog, and finally to a walk.

Tips

  • Don't slow down before the finish line, run straight through it as this will achieve quicker times.
  • When you approach the finish line lean forward to get yourself over it quicker.
  • Look in front, head up high and not looking at the other competitors.
  • Position yourself correctly at the starting line. If you start standing up, put your dominant foot in front of the other to get a good kick start. Your body and eyes should be facing ahead instead of in any other direction. One of your hands should be in front of your body while the other is behind you. They should be parallel in the direction in which you're supposed to be facing.
  • If you are starting on all-fours, face forward with your body leaning forward as well. For example, if your right foot is dominant, your right knee would be a few inches directly below your chest, with the base of your right foot on the ground. The tip of your left foot should be on the ground with your left knee a short distance off the ground. Your hands should be in any position on the ground except palms down. If your palms are flat out on the ground, your entire body weight will on your palms when some pressure should also be applied to your right foot.
  • When your foot hits the ground, try to pull it straight back up so you're spending more time in the air than on the ground.
  • Start by running slow and then sprint.

Warnings

  • While running, don't over-swing your arms or legs, and don't hyperventilate.
  • Don't clench your fists when you are standing up, ready to run. You will tense up your muscles and lose a little energy during the race.
