Wrap Silverware

Wrapping silverware in a cloth napkin is a decorative way to dress the place settings of any dinner party. Having your silverware wrapped also allows you to easily carry your plate and cutlery if you are eating at a buffet style meal. Wrapping silverware gives a clean finished look to the table setting.

Steps

  1. Place a square cloth napkin on the table in front of you at an angle so it looks like a diamond. Make sure the napkin is free of wrinkles so the napkin roll will be smooth when finished. Iron the napkin if necessary to eliminate all wrinkles.
  2. Pull the bottom corner up to the top corner of the napkin. The cloth napkin will now be shaped like a triangle. Line the seams so they are even; smooth out creases in the fabric.
  3. Lay down your dinner knife along the bottom edge. Center it even so the middle of the knife is aligned with the top corner of the napkin. Leave a space between the edge of the napkin and the cutlery. Place a fork directly on top of the knife and then lay a spoon on the fork so the cutlery is stacked in a straight line.
  4. Fold the bottom edge of the napkin over onto the silverware and smooth it out across the new seam line. Hold the fabric in place with 1 hand so the edge will stay secure while you fold in the end pieces. With the other hand, fold the right side of the napkin all the way over the cutlery. Repeat this on the left corner of the napkin so that both corners overlap in the middle. Make sure the corners are snug where they crease against the covered cutlery. For reference, the napkin should now form the outline of a house.
  5. Hold tight against the edge of the cutlery and roll the napkin toward the top corner. Keep the napkin snug so that the napkin roll does not fall apart easily.
  6. Secure the roll by using a napkin ring or a piece of ribbon. Place the finished napkin roll on your place setting with the exposed seam facing down. You may rest it on the right of the dinner plate or directly on top of the plate. For a buffet arrangement, have the wrapped silverware in a basket so guests can take one as they make their way through the buffet line.

Tips

  • You may also use paper napkins for this project. In that case, unfold the napkin completely so it is a large square, then follow the same directions, otherwise the napkin will be too small to properly cover the cutlery as it is rolled. Be care to not tear the napkin.
  • You can use anything to secure the napkin roll together. If you are hosting an outdoor party, you may consider using twine or long blades of grass. For an event held for little girls, you may wish to use a bracelet that they can take home with them as a gift. Or you may also choose to forgo any fasteners altogether.
