Wrap a Gift Expertly

Wrapping gifts makes them fun to give. Follow this "rap on wrap" to wrap perfect packages every time.

Steps

  1. Unroll enough paper that you can place the box on the extended section of paper and the paper will completely go around the box, plus a little extra (just in case). Check that there's enough paper to cover the sides.
  2. Bring the loose end of the roll over the top of the box to cover it with 5 cm (2 in.) extra. Mark the paper where the extra overlaps. This is where you will have to cut.
  3. Take the box away. Fold the paper at the pencil mark or use a ruler to draw a straight line where you need to cut. Cut the paper.
  4. Put the box back in place. Eyeball the paper ends. The ends should be long enough to completely cover the box, but short enough so that they fold smoothly into flaps without crinkles and bulges. Fold the ends over the box to check and mark if you need to trim.
  5. Remove the box. Cut the paper neatly at both ends where you marked.
  6. Place the box in the middle of the paper, topside down.
  7. Bring one long edge of the paper up around the box. Tape it in place at the centre.
  8. Make a neat edge at the opposite end of the paper by folding it under about 2.5 cm (1 in.).
  9. Bring this edge to the centre of the box to overlap the first edge taped in place. Tape the second edge to cover the first edge.
  10. Turn the box so that one of the short ends faces you.
  11. Fold in both sides of the paper toward the middle to form two triangular flaps, one on the top and one on the bottom.
  12. Leave the flaps free for the moment and tape both sides of the paper to the box.
  13. Run your fingers along the edges of the triangular flaps to make four sharp creases.
  14. Press the top flap down against the box. Tape it in place.
  15. Bring the lower flap up so that it lies flat on the box. Tape it in place. Admire your work.
  16. Turn the box so the other short end faces you. Repeat steps 11-15. Your box should now be neatly wrapped in paper. Add a card and bow and you're good to go!
  17. Finished.

Tips

  • Work on a large, flat surface where there is plenty of light. And always make sure you remove the price tag from the gift before you wrap it.
  • Using sparkling gift wrap and ribbon will make it look bold.
  • All thumbs? If that's how you feel, using a gift bag is the wrapping technique for you. Wrap your gift in one or two sheets of tissue paper that match or contrast with the colours of your gift bag. Place the gift in the bottom of the bag, then stuff the bag with four or more sheets of tissue paper. Or create your own gift bag. Decorate a paper bag with stamps, stickers, puff paints, glitter glue, or gel writers. And voila! Just add gift!
