Write Numbers in Tally Marks
Tally numbers are special. They are not numerals, but can be used to keep track of many things especially when collecting data for statistical analysis.
Steps
By Hand
- For number 1, draw one regular line: |
- For number 2, draw two lines: ||
- For number 3, draw three lines: |||
- For number 4, draw four lines: ||||
- For number 5, draw four lines (||||) with a diagonal (\) line through it.
- A ten would be two fives.
On a Computer
- If you want to do this on the computer, instead of using "IIII", use the key above enter on PC + Shift so it will be something like this "||||"
- Then, you need to select your Tally and press on "strike through" button.
Tips
- Use this to keep score or to count other things that come in dribs and drabs, for example in a traffic survey.
