Write a Resume for a Mechanical Engineering Job
Are you a mechanical engineer looking to get your foot in the door? Having trouble writing the perfect resume that will get you your dream job or internship? Look no farther. Here, you will find step by step instructions on how to write a resume for a mechanical engineering job that will do nothing but impress the intended audience.
Steps
- Learn about what exactly the employer is looking for. What kind of skills is the employer looking for and how qualified are you for the job you are pursuing?
- Analyze what kind of job you are applying for and determine how the employer will be looking at multiple resumes. If many people are applying for the same job, you want to make sure you put important information and impressive feats early on in the resume and make sure you are short and to the point. If the employer is expecting limited applicants, then be sure to go in detail about work experience and skills.
- After determining the employers needs, make sure your resume specifically goes over what the employer wants. If the employer doesn’t see what they are looking for, they will not be impressed. If the find exactly what they need in the resume, they will continue reading and show further interest.
- Depending on how much information the employer is looking for, determine how long your resume is going to be. The reader may get bored if it is too long with excess detail. But at the same time, make sure all of your skills and accomplishments are included. Aim for about a one page resume.
- Determine what kind of resume you will be writing.
- Experience-based: A resume that mainly focuses on prior job experience in the field.
- Skills- based: A resume that mainly focuses on skills that the applicant has.
- Combination of the two: A resume that includes both prior job experiences and skills.
- Make sure you are writing concise and to the point. You should be able to get all of your work experience and skills across to the audience in a short amount of time so don’t waste time on small details.
- Be specific when writing about your skills and job experience. A employer wants to know exactly where you have worked and what skills you have because they need to know what they are getting themselves into.
- Grammar is extremely important as it shows professionalism so be sure to use consistent verb tenses throughout the resume. This is a common mistake when it comes to talk about job experience.
- Make sure you include contact information at the top of the page so the employer knows how to contact you if they are interested by your resume. Include name, address, phone number, and email address.
- Be sure to include an objective near the top of the page that gives a very quick overview on everything you have to offer the employer. Often times, this is the first thing that the reader will see so make sure a strong first impression is given.
- Include any special abilities you have that could be beneficial in any way to the employer. In the mechanical engineering field, mention if you are familiar with any software programs such as CAD and C++.
- Adding some interests that you have outside of work can also be helpful as it shows the employer more about yourself. This is a great way to separate yourself from other applicants so be sure to mention anything that could potentially impress the reader.
- Last but not least, make sure the resume is formatted correctly. If the resume is appealing to the eye, the reader will want to keep reading automatically and vice versa. Some things to keep in mind:
- Bullet points
- Consistent font
- Consistent font sizes
- Bold headings
- Appropriate margins
