Write a Song for Your Girlfriend or Boyfriend

Maybe your boyfriend or girlfriend is upset because you can't really express yourself to him/her very well. As a result, you want to express your love to him/her without a display of PDA or a clichéd card. Or maybe you love him/her so much and want to express your feelings towards him/her in song. Writing a song for your significant other will show him/her that you've taken the time to distill your feelings for him/her into a piece of art.

Steps

  1. Examine your emotions towards your boyfriend/girlfriend. Do you feel.... love, empathy, gratitude, jealousy, anger, etc.? What does he/she do to you? Does he/she hypnotize you, paralyze you, and make you want to jump off a cliff? An example for this is, "When you stare into my gaze, I can find you, in a haze, I see your face, your hair, your skin, I find myself in love again."
  2. How do you feel about love? Do you love it, like it, don't know, dislike it, hate it, etc? Analyze it a little deeper than you normally would. An example for this is, "It swims through my soul, it echoes in the hall, how am I supposed to know, when we're gonna lose it all?"
  3. Incorporate how you feel about love, with how you feel about your partner. If you feel love and passion towards him/her, but are unsure about love, it could go like, "I know what I feel for you, I don't know how to explain, But I know for sure, one thing, I'll never be the same."
  4. Describe your partner to yourself and write it down (you ARE writing every idea down, right??) with everything else. (Also, be sure to put them in sections, like, "Step 1, 2, 3...) Is he/she beautiful, upbeat, cocky, impish, quirky, silly, cute, sexy, attractive, conservative, impossible, etc.? An example for this is, "You are so real, you are so fun, you remind me of, the setting sun."
  5. Describe the kind of relationship you two have. Is it an honest, loving relationship, a sexy, but somehow, at the same time, a fulfilling relationship, or is it just fun and light-hearted? An example for this is, "We might not be perfect, but everything is worth it, when I see your gorgeous smile."
  6. What would you like your future to be with him/her? Can you see yourself living with him/her forever, or do you just want to live in the moment with him/her in your arms? An example for this would be, "I'm so utterly, completely in love with you, but I need to live in the moment, with you tonight, I need to be here in this moment, with you tonight."
  7. Overall, are you in love with him/her? That'll be your closing statement: if you love him/her. An example for this would be, "The only thing I can say is... I'm in love with you."
  8. Put it all together! Ask your band for help with the musical stuff, like guitar, keys, bass, etc....... and sing the song for him/her, even if you have a bad singing voice. He'll/she'll appreciate the song, not to mention that you had the guts to sing it to him/her, instead of letting the lead singer (if you aren't the lead singer already, or unless you don't have one) sing it.

Tips

  • Don't put stuff like, "If I could rip my heart out and put it in your hands, I would." It's a little bit of a turn off. Instead, use, "Be careful with my gift of life, my heart is in your hands." It's a lot more attractive to the ears and heart.
  • Don't say, or rather, sing, things like, "I wanna make love to you all night, rolling into the morning sun." That's implies moving a little too fast, expecting a little too much of your boyfriend/girlfriend. Try saying something like, "Your kiss is irresistible, I crave your loving touch, your eyes are most unbearable, I'm delving in too much, of your love, in the sun, I miss you, I want you...." It, once again, sounds a whole lot better.
  • Don't get too mushy, but be honest.
  • Explain that you wrote it for him/her, and every word came from the heart.
  • Remember that to write a good song you don't need lyrics, but if you're doing an instrumental you want to convey your emotions into the instrument you're playing (recommended piano or guitar)
  • If you're writing a song about someone you have a crush on but you're not dating. Mention why you like them and when you first started liking them.

Warnings

  • Don't get onto too touchy topics, like death, or anything.
  • Don't imply too much, and don't get sexual, like Animals by Nickelback or Pour Some Sugar On Me. It's okay to drop subtle hints, but not flat-out "I want to sleep with you."

Things You'll Need

  • A heart and head full of ideas
  • A pencil or pen
  • A boyfriend/girlfriend, even a crush or spouse
  • Paper, obviously
  • A band to help with the musical parts (unless you're doing this solo with a guitar, or something along the lines of that)
  • An honest voice
