Write a Three Prong Thesis

This guide can show you how to create the three-prong thesis statement, which is the easy essay skeleton that can also be transformed into longer papers/reports.

Steps

  1. Determine what the topic will be, and create three sections of either: a) points of interest, activities, steps, places, descriptions or things to talk about (for expository writing), or b) list three points that support or refute the main statement/position of the essay or paper (for argumentative writing).
  2. Create a thesis statement as follows:Introductory phrase (outlining your argument, place you are describing, thing you are describing et cetera) + list three: points/reasons/refutations/causes/places/things that are the foundation for what you are trying to express.
  3. Create your skeleton - Thesis statement, First reason/cause et cetera, Second reason/cause et cetera and then the Third reason/cause et cetera
  4. Put some muscle on the bones. Fill in the three points with paragraphs that support your original cause for writing the paper in the first place. If you are explaining why smoking is unhealthy, for instance, an example of three points would be: 1. Leading cause of cancer, 2. Cause of many respiratory disorders, and 3. Contributes to, and accelerates, the aging process.
  5. Then, write a closing statement that summarizes the original topic/thesis and you're done!

Tips

  • It should be relatively simple to do a little research to fill in the three sections to support your position, describe a scene, or explain your topic.
  • If the topic is assigned, which is rarely enjoyable, try to come up with a new angle or a different approach that makes it interesting to you - no one likes to read the work of a disenchanted writer.
  • If there must be more than three sections after the thesis, then please keep them limited to no more than five total areas. You don't want to have fifteen paragraphs of only two sentences long a piece, and you also don't want to give the reader too much to digest. Keep it simple.
  • Try to find topics that are entertaining and have a lot of materials available for research. This way, you (and the reader) won't get bored.
  • The more material you collect, the longer the paper can become.

Warnings

  • Constructing beginner essays in this manner makes it simple to learn how to organize ideas and concepts, while being able to make a point with the writing itself.
  • This method will not carry you all the way through college. It is merely a starting point from which to develop.
  • DO NOT RELY UPON SPELLCHECK AS THE ANSWER TO ALL SPELLING PROBLEMS! Spell check can help a little, but it will NOT help you with the difference between their/there/they're or anything similar because it cannot tell the difference. Also, spell check cannot check and correct all jargon, scientific, medical, legal or other special words, such as names, places and the like unless those words are already in the very narrow dictionary it uses. It also cannot check for context or proper usage. Do not use Grammatik either, unless you know what you are doing. That's not always correct either.
