Achieve Fame on Wattpad

Everyone wants their story to be read, commented and voted on on the site. So how does one get into the Watty awards or achieve fame?

Steps

Be fascinating

  1. Find a genre that you're absolutely comfortable writing about. Is it teen fiction? Romance? Or perhaps horror? Whatever it is, choose something you know that you can write about with passion, vivid interest and an obvious skill. Making your story fascinating is absolutely vital for getting noticed.
  2. Pick an enticing plot in your work(s). Don't write a story about drying paint. Find something that will have your readership riveted.
  3. Use good grammar. Extend your vocabulary, your phrasing and your descriptiveness beyond the ordinary. If you find this difficult, it means you need to read a lot more, and more widely too.
  4. Read the works of all the other famous Wattpad writers. What are their stories about? Werewolves? Fanfictions? Or maybe some poetry? Try writing in a similar vein, without copying, of course. You will need your own plot, your own twists and your own characters––be inspired by, not wed to, someone else's works.
  5. Put effort into your cover. Contrary to the old saying, a lot of people actually do judge books by their covers, and the cover is definitely the first thing people will see. Make it look professional with eye-catching pictures and fonts, and make sure the title stands out. Study covers of books you own to see what good covers look like. Along with the cover, something readers will first see is your description, so make the description detailed and interesting. Again, you can study the blurbs on published books you own as a model.

Getting known

  1. Try joining the Share Your Story or Undiscovered Gems and promote your story there. Make it sound interesting to read - because many people just ignore all the requests.
  2. Don't advertise your works on other people's profiles. It's against the Policy and no one wants that. Simply go with the flow and eventually, some reader will stumble across your page.
  3. Enter the Watty Awards. If you feel you're a really good writer and you absolutely adore fame, you can categorize your story under "Watty Awards ___", since everyone likes reading the Watty Awards entries.
  4. Don't be rude, sarcastic, or mean to anyone, even if they seem like pains in the necks. Try being the exact opposite and you'll gain lots of followers and readers - remember, treat other people the way you want to be treated.
    • Equally, don't make deals with people to vote on each other's stories so that you can gain fame.
  5. Join clubs that fascinate you. Comment on those clubs and interact with other Wattpadders. Create your own discussions that people can join. That can really help you get noticed.
  6. Keep your readers updated on what will happen next, such as a teaser or a cliffhanger moment. In addition, keep them updated as to when your next update will be, since most readers doesn't have the patience you expect and some of them might stop reading your story because they think you stopped updating it. The update deadline also pushes you to ensure you meet it.
  7. Expect the "fame" to take a while to materialize. Fame on Wattpad doesn't occur in one night. Let your works slowly achieve the number of reads/votes you desire, even if it takes a long time. Remember, there are millions of writers/readers out there!

Interacting with others

  1. When you get a new follower, message them. Ask them for "A read for a read?" Give them a friendly compliment on about their profile. At the end of the day, trading reads isn't the best way to get 'famous.' Occasionally the person your trading with may go and read the rest of your story out of interest, but most of the time the reads you get from read trading are meaningless. Remember, you want readers, not reads.
  2. Talk to more people. Get yourself out there. You cannot expect to become famous (though, in rare cases you can) and write a book without commenting, voting and becoming a part of the Wattpad community. Talk about movies or books or sometimes randomly message people.
  3. Comment on other people's books and stories. You'd be surprised at how easy it is to gain followers just by commenting and engaging in conversations with people! Make yourself known to others.

Tips

  • Keep the stories interesting! Followers need to stay hooked into the book.
  • Interact with your followers and always reply to comments on your stories thanking them for reading and commenting
  • Support other writers, they might return the love!
  • Don't ask for votes or beg for comments.
  • Join clubs. It will help you get noticed
  • Have a fascinating username, profile picture and bio to gain followers
  • Remind your readers to vote
  • Use other social networking sites to promote your story like Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, Instagram, etc.
  • Have an interesting cover. Make sure it's an eye grabber. Have an interesting title as well.
  • Connect your Wattpad with your Twitter. Whenever you update, it will tweet about it and all your followers will have the link in their timelines.
  • Don't pressure yourself to be better than others; don't brag if you get more followers. Same thing goes with votes and reads. Nobody likes a famous show off.
  • Advertise your story through Facebook, Tumblr, or Twitter :) You could also try to write stories that have a good storyline and good characters.

Warnings

  • Don't respond to hate. It can discourage you and make you lose confidence. Also know the difference between hate and critique because some people are just pointing out mistakes and you may take it as hate while they're just trying to help.
  • Don't advertise your stories on other people's stories. Its rude and against the rules of wattpad. In some cases it just makes people want to stay away from your story.
  • Don't vote trade. Vote trading is against the rules and the votes you get are meaningless. Think twice before you do such actions.
