Add Track Markers in Audacity

Audacity is a popular and widely used open source audio editing and mastering application. A label marker, also called a track marker, is a tool used by digital audio editing and mastering software applications for placing text annotations and notes at specific locations along an editing timeline. Label markers can be used for a variety of purposes, but are most typically used by a composer to mark points along the audio track where certain changes are to occur. Audacity uses a "label track" system in which a separate track for text labels is inserted next to the audio track being edited. Once the label track is inserted into the audio editing timeline, text labels can be added at any point along the editing timeline. This article provides instructions on how to add track markers to a label track in Audacity.

Steps

Add a Label Track to the Editing Timeline

  1. Click the Project tab on the menu bar.
  2. Select "Add label track" from the pull-down menu. A blank label track, similar in appearance to an audio track, will appear in the editing timeline.

Add a Text Label to the Label Track

  1. Click on the location inside the audio track to be marked with a text label. A blue line marking the selected location will be visible inside the audio track.
  2. Click the Project tab on the menu bar and select the option "Add label at selection" from the pull-down menu. A small red text box will appear inside the label track at the corresponding selection point in the audio track.
  3. Type the desired text for the label marker and click enter.

Remove or Edit a Label Marker in Audacity

  1. Change the text of a label marker by clicking inside the red label marker text box and pressing the backspace button on your computer keyboard.
    • Type the new text into the red label marker box located in the label track. The label marker has been edited.
  2. Delete the label marker. Click and drag to select the text inside the label marker, click the Project tab, and select "Remove tracks" from the pull-down menu. The label marker has been removed.
  3. Remove the label track by clicking the "x" located on the far left side of the label track. The label track has been removed.
