Add a Title in iMovie

Adding a title to your iMovie project allows you to accurately present the movie that is playing, label specific video clips in your project, as well as add credits to your iMovie project. These title-adding options can be used for both home movies as well as amateur and professional film projects. IMovie's program presents you with numerous title display options to begin with then allows you to edit the text according to your specific project.

Steps

  1. Open your iMovie program and select the iMovie project you would like to add a title to from the Project Library column on the left hand side of the iMovie window.
  2. Click on the "Titles" button designated by a "T" in the middle pane on the far right hand side of your iMovie window. This will open the Titles section, showing all of the display options for your title addition in your iMovie project. The choices are located in the bottom right hand corner of your iMovie window.
  3. Scroll down and select a style of title display you want to add to your iMovie project. IMovie presents these titles as generic prototypes for you to understand what the title display will look like once in your iMovie project.
  4. Click on and hold down the title display you have selected and drag it onto the iMovie project clips display portion of the screen. This is located diagonally up and left from the titles display section.
  5. Drop the title display on top of the video clip you want the title to show up on during your iMovie project. By releasing the mouse button. The iMovie program will then display a window for you to change the text and preferences of your titles display in the section directly to the right of the video clips.
  6. Double click on the "Title Text Here", "Subtitle Text Here", and any other areas of your title display that allow you to add text. This will allow you to customize the text areas f the title display.
  7. Type in the text and titles you want to add to your iMovie project clips. You can change the font style, size, color and other customizable attributes by highlighting the text of your title and clicking on the "Show Fonts" button located at the top left hand corner of the editing title section at the top right hand corner of the iMovie window. From the fonts window, select the changes you want made to the font of the title to preview the fonts in the title edit screen. Press the "Enter" button when you are finished.
  8. Move the timing slider directly below the video clips section in order to customize how long your title appears on the screen.
  9. Click the "Play" button designated by the play symbol (sideways triangle) near the top right hand corner of the title edit section in order to play you iMovie project with the titles you have just added and preview your work.



Tips

  • You can also edit the space your title takes up in the video clip by using the "Fit," "Crop," and "Ken Burns" options on the upper left of the title edit screen. Access these options by clicking on the video clip your title display is in, in the video clip section to the left of the title edit section. You can also move the placement of the title by clicking on the title within the title edit section and moving the text box around the video clip screen. If your title edit screen has arrows, you can select the side your title enters the screen from using those tools.
