Add an iPod to a Factory Car Stereo
If you have an iPod or iPhone, then you probably find yourself wanting to listen to your tunes in your car. However, you may not want to upgrade the factory radio in your car. Here are a few ways to play your iPod or iPhone on your car's factory radio.
Steps
- If you have an older car equipped with a cassette player, then you're probably not playing cassette tapes on it anymore. You can purchase an adapter to insert into the cassette tape deck with a 3.5-millimeter auxiliary plug on the end of it. You'll plug your iPod or iPhone into the 3.5-millimeter auxiliary plug. Then, just use the cassette player function on your car's factory radio in order to play your iPod or iPhone, and turn the volume on your iPod or iPhone to full volume. You'll use the factory radio's volume control to control the volume of your iPod or iPhone.
- If you have a newer car equipped with a 3.5-millimeter auxiliary input jack on the front of it, you can purchase a 3.5-millimeter auxiliary cable. One end of the cable will plug into the front of the factory radio, and the other end of the cable will plug into your iPod or iPhone. Turn up the volume on your iPod or iPhone to full volume, then use the factory radio's volume control to control the volume of your iPod or iPhone.
- If your factory radio in your car has a CD changer input or satellite radio antenna input on the back of it, then you can remove your car's factory radio and plug a special iPod adapter into either the CD changer or satellite radio antenna input on the back of the factory radio. In many cases, information from your iPod or iPhone will display directly on the factory radio's display, if you have a newer car. You'll use either your factory radio's CD changer or satellite radio controls in order to browse your iPod or iPhone. In many cases, you can also use the factory steering wheel-mounted audio system controls, if so equipped, to control your iPod or iPhone. You'll use the factory radio's volume control in order to control the volume of your iPod or iPhone. Keep in mind not to disconnect your car's battery when uninstalling or installing your car's factory radio in order to install the iPod adapter into your car. You can also charge your iPod or iPhone using the iPod adapter.
- If your car has a rear DVD entertainment system connected to the factory radio, then you can purchase an A/V cable set and plug the left and right audio cables into the rear DVD entertainment system's A/V input jacks. You'll select the DVD input on your factory radio, and also turn up the volume on your iPod or iPhone to full volume. You'll use the factory radio's volume control to control the volume of your iPod or iPhone.
- If your car has Bluetooth audio streaming capabilities (newer cars), you can pair your iPod or iPhone with your factory radio. You can use the factory radio's and factory steering wheel-mounted audio system controls in order to control your iPod or iPhone, and also use your voice to tell the iPod or iPhone what to play. You can even use applications such as Pandora or iHeart Radio in order to play music from those applications through your car's factory radio. In most cases, the information from your iPod or iPhone will show on your factory radio's display.
- If your car has an iPod or USB input jack, then you can plug your iPod or iPhone directly into your factory radio and use the steering wheel-mounted factory audio system controls and controls on your factory radio to control your iPod. In most cases, information from your iPod or iPhone will show on the factory radio's display, and the car will charge your iPod or iPhone when it is plugged in.
- Finally, if your car does not have any of these ways to plug in an iPod or iPhone, you can purchase an FM adapter that plugs into your iPod or iPhone (it may also charge your iPod or iPhone when it is plugged in). You'll tune your factory radio to the indicated FM radio station and the adapter will play your iPod or iPhone through the FM radio system in your car.
- If you want better quality, consider upgrading your factory stereo.
