Alleviate Menstruation Pain With Natural Remedies

If you have menstrual cramps and don't like taking medication or just want to try something other than painkillers some of these tips may help you.

Steps

  1. Start exercising a week or so before you start your period. If you don't feel like exercising on the day of your period do some simple stretches.
  2. Get a heating pad or hot water bottle.
  3. Drink a lot of water.
  4. Try to relax or take a nap if possible.
  5. Eat a banana (the potassium in them may help prevent/help ease the pain).
  6. Massage your abdomen.
  7. Have a lot of fluids (water) to keep you hydrated.

Tips

  • Wear loose clothes just to be comfy. No one wants to be uncomfortable when they're on their period.
  • Sometimes curling up in the fetal position may help ease some of the pain.
  • Stay away from caffeine and salty foods before and during your period. Caffeine has an overstimulating effect on the body which will make you cramp up more and may make you bleed heavier. Eating salty foods will make you more bloated and make you feel worse.
  • Drink something warm like a decaffeinated herbal tea with honey instead of sugar. Red raspberry leaf tea or green tea work great.
  • Stay hydrated! Drink plenty of water and maybe even some Gatorade, muscles tend to cramp up if they are dehydrated.
  • Do something to take your mind off of the pain. (Read a book, watch something funny, look at pictures, listen to music, etc.)
  • Drinking peppermint tea or putting a few drop of peppermint extract in some water may help soothe your stomach if it's a little upset during your period.
  • Do some stretching exercises. It helps ease the pain.
  • If your cramps are severe and nothing works for you (natural remedies or taking pain meds), talk to your doctor about birth control pills, which may help get rid of your cramps and lighten your period
  • If you feel cramps coming on, try walking around.
  • Try taking magnesium supplements. Helps tons.

Warnings

  • If you have severe cramps and are nauseous, vomiting, have a fever, or fainting, go to the doctor because there may be an underlying problem.
