Apply Eye Black for Baseball

Eye black is a greasy black substance consisting of beeswax, paraffin and carbon that's applied under your eyes to reduce the sun's glare. It can also take the form of black stickers. Eye black has been used for centuries as a way to reduce the glare from the sun, but most recently it is used by baseball and American football players to help track the flight of balls under the bright sun or stadium lights. To learn how to apply eye black for baseball, follow these steps.

Steps

Use an Eye Black Stick

  1. Remove the eye black stick from its package.
  2. Take off the lid to the eye black stick. A lid to eye black is removed much in the same way you remove a lid from a stick of lip balm.
  3. Apply the eye black to your face.
    • Place the stick on the outside of either eye. The starting point for your eye black should be on the cheek bone, right below the outside edge of your eye cavity.
    • Draw a horizontal line under your eye. From your starting point, draw a line approximately 1.25 inches (31.75 mm) across the base of your eye and end near the bridge of your nose.
    • Repeat the process of applying the eye black to your other eye.
  4. Examine your eye black in a mirror. Make sure the eye black is uniform. Ensure that are no areas that need to be filled in with additional eye black.

Use Eye Black Strips

  1. Cut the strips from their packaging. Eye black strips come in a package much like a package of stickers. Cutting off the top of the package and sliding the adhesive black strips out of the package is an effective way to access the strips.
  2. Remove the strips from the sheet on which they're held.
  3. Place eye black strips onto your face.
    • Adhere the strip below your eye so the middle of it aligns with your pupil.
    • Press down the eye black strip about 0.5 inch (12.7 mm) below the base of your eye.
    • Repeat the process of placing a strip onto your face below the other eye.
  4. Check the mirror to make sure the eye black strips are even on your face. Remove and replace them correctly if they are not.

Tips

  • If you're applying your eye black right before the game and don't have a mirror available, have a buddy hold up some sunglasses to make sure the eye black is even.
  • Eye black strips can be customized with team names, logos, or other text or images on the small surface areas.

Warnings

  • Do not apply the eye black strips over your eyes. This will inhibit you from seeing anything.
  • Do not apply black tar under your eyes as a substitute for eye black. You may not be able to safely remove black tar from under your eyes.
