Apply the Makeup of a Renaissance Woman

Before attending a renaissance festival, only investing time on finding costumes and other stuff will not give you a complete look. How you apply the makeup will give you the final touch to your whole appearance. So here are some of the tips which you can follow to match with your full attire.

Steps

  1. Know your position:
    • If you're going as a peasant woman, don't wear anything. Peasants' lives were spent in toil and pain, and they didn't have money to waste on even simple things like makeup. Extra poor peasants could apply some stage dirt for comic affect.
    • If you're a noble woman, you will want to wear a very light, almost white foundation. It was very in-style to wear a white face.
  2. Wear sunscreen under your foundation. Otherwise, you may get some bad sunburn! (Let the sunscreen settle in for a few minutes before applying foundation.)
  3. Try a light ivory tone or even a light beige if light/white foundation doesn't look good on your skin. (Be careful though, the ivory tones may turn some women's face colors to almost an orange-ish color, depending on their skin tone.)
  4. Work out if your persona could wear lipstick or not. As far as lipstick goes, noble women can wear it. A very common color was red, so use colors in that family - burgundy, dark red, etc. Don't wear pink though.
  5. Powder your face. This is a must!
  6. Put on eye makeup for the noble woman persona. A thin line of black eyeliner will do fine, and mascara. You can use eyeshadow as well, but keep it in the natural tones as well.
  7. Use blush on a noble woman persona; to accentuate cheek bones.

Tips

  • There is a halfway point. If you're playing a merchant/middle class you might have a paler face, but not completely white and some lipstick.
  • Don't buy the foundation from Halloween/costume stores. They're bad for your skin, and just aren't very good. Try one from the drugstore or grocery store (if they aren't in supply, try a makeup manufacturer, or stage makeup).
  • Carry a small tube of sunscreen with you, for additional applications throughout the day. Make sure it's at least SPF 15 or higher, apply it on any part of your body showing.
  • Do not use cream products (eyeshadow, foundation, or blush) if you have oily skin, or you sweat easily. It is more likely to smear.

Warnings

  • On a hot summer day, makeup can run or melt so be mindful of this.
