Ask for Directions
A guy's (and gal's) guide to asking for directions.
Steps
- Admit defeat. Stop as soon as you realize you're off track so that you can get the most knowledgeable person.
- Stop at a local shop or restaurant and ask an employee for directions.
- Give as many details as you can when making your inquiry to help them give you the best directions. Depending on your destination it may be best to ask how to get to a particular street rather than your final destination.
- Listen carefully to directions.
- Write them down or get the person to write it down for you so you don't forget.
- Repeat the directions back to them before you leave to make sure you got them right.
- Follow the directions.
- Don't be afraid to stop somewhere else to get more detailed directions.
Tips
- Delivery people (for example, pizza, flowers, etc.) know the area well, as do taxi drivers.
- Swallow your pride and save yourself some time by asking ASAP when you realize you're lost.
- Get directions/maps online before you go to avoid the hassle.
- Locals generally know the area best.
Warnings
- Use common sense with the directions you receive.
