Avoid Paying York University Parking Tickets

This is a short guide on how to legitimately avoid paying York University parking tickets. Please bear in mind that this guide is only applicable if the student is not the owner of the car.

Steps

Review Parking Regulations

  1. Review York parking regulations. Check out 4.3 for the parking rules and regulations at York – if they cannot prove that you are the driver or the owner of the car, they cannot penalize you.
  2. Be aware of questions they may ask you. Preparing answers ahead of time will help you prepare in advance for the session (via phone or in person). See Sample questions under the Additional hints (below) for further detail.
  3. Examine your Settlement Options. After grilling you, York University will ask you to settle at this point and give you two basic options:1) Pay upfront or 2)They will give the owner a call to discuss the dispute
  4. Renegotiate Your Bargaining Position. There are two ways to go about this:
    • 1. Say that they could contact your parents through the mail and then revert back to your own personal situation. Remember, this has nothing to do with you, so there shouldn’t be any sanctions put in place of your situation. Even if they press on, the key point is not to give out any personal information. You MUST be assertive in this stance, otherwise you’ll have to proceed to ..
    • 2. (See Tips for sample dialogue on 1).
  5. Pursue further steps under option 2:
    • Say that you’ll get the owner to call them. Then, wait a day before you call York back saying that the owner does not want to contact York because they’re convinced they’ve already paid.
    • Demand that the sanction be lifted from you.
  6. Deal with Threats. York may threaten to have the collection agency after the owner (as last resort guilt and to try to coerce you into paying, but stay firm!) they will say that it will affect the credit rating of the owner but whether or not the claim goes through depends on the amount that you owe and whether York is competent to actually file a report/claim.
    • This is why it is important to not provide any personal detail about anything. Moreover, if they do sell their debt to a collections agency, there are a bunch of ways to revoke it. The key point that must be considered is if they send the debt to the collection agency, you should not pay a dime.
    • Doing so can lower your credit rating. Refer to the sources in this article for further detail. If you don’t pay, your credit rating will remain unaffected. York’s threats are mostly empty as long as you don’t give them any personal information (especially with credit/debt card information, phone numbers, etc.)

Tips

  • Remember, you have all the bargaining power here!
  • Consider this expression: You: "Yes, I know but this is really between you and the owner. The contact information is there in the mailing address so if you want to contact him/her, it’s there. But that’s not the issue though, this issue has to do with Me and jeopardizing my convocation on an unreasonable basis". At this point, they may stopped pressing.

Additional Hints

  • York: "Well yes, we understand that, but we can’t do anything until we contact the owner " (LIES, they can’t do anything period, they have NO RIGHT to obtain the owner’s personal information nor do they have any right to charge you in the first place)
  • It is much easier to negotiate with York University come convocation time. There are many more graduating students who will be doing the same thing, so it would not make sense for them to spend a substantial amount of time on your case.
  • POSSIBLE QUESTIONS THAT WILL BE ASKED INCLUDE:
    • Are you the driver of the car?///No, blame it on someone else.
      • Well if you’re not then can you explain to me why your car was parked at Calumet lot on X day? If not, who did? ///Say you don’t have any recollection – it’s been too long or blame it on your friend, make an excuse up
    • Why was it there? Were you doing anything in particular that day? ///Make up a story or deny. You’re not sure because it’s been a long time ago, you were probably moving into residence.
    • I’ve noticed that you have X in admin fees and X in tickets since 2003. How come you/your parents didn’t pay your bills? ///Say that’s the responsibility of the owner, not yours, this has nothing to do with you
    • Do you come here often? ///Questionable comment – may be a trap: say that the driver of the car picks you up and drops you off
    • Why would the driver park there? What were his intentions or her intentions? ///Make up a story.
      • POINT: It is important to dissociate yourself from the situation. Say that you really find it unfair how you’re being punished for something that has nothing to do with you in the first place.

Sample Dialogue for Option 1

  • You: "I understand that you want to get this settled as much as I do. However, I’m really not involved in this situation as it’s really the issue between York and (the owner) and because of that, the sanction in my name must be removed – you can penalize the owner as well as the driver, but you really can’t punish their family members or anyone living in the same mailing address – it doesn’t make sense".

Warnings

  • Do not show this to any York University Administration for obvious reasons. Eventually, this will show up because someone will spill the beans or when a random York Administration employee stumbles across this page. Regardless, this method has been tried, tested and true so for the time being, it is quite effective.
