Be a Better Player in Any MMORPG
Have you ever sat at your computer and wondered how to be better in an MMORPG? Here are some tips that you can consider to help improve your MMORPG gameplay.

Steps
- Experiment with different MMORPGs. You can search on the web for free MMORPGs or on the shelves of any video game store. This will help you as better games have more stats and basic skills you can use in the game.
- Choose your play style
- Player vs Player
- Player vs Environment
- Role Play
- Choose a powerful class. Very few MMORPGs have a perfect balance between the classes. Inform yourself beforehand which classes are considered overpowered and which are considered underpowered. A good source of information are message boards on the official homepage or on fansites.
- Spellcasters tend to be overpowered in most games when played correctly and usually allow one or two tricks to kill much stronger monsters with ease. They also usually have some Area of Effect(or AoE)and Damage over Time(DoT) Spells that allow for a great addition to a team. Unfortunately in some games you have to use expensive ingredients to cast even the most basic attack spells. Use this class if you want to cause lots of damage from a distance, and if you have a small team.
- Melee fighters are usually very simple to play and don't have any abilities that allow them to earn a lot of exp by playing good. They have high armor that allows them to be 'tanks', which are players that take the monsters hit while others attack from afar. They usually have pretty high attack and defense, but fail in magic attacks. Use this if you are a confident player.
- Healing and supporting characters are weak to unplayable when alone in most games. But on the other hand they are usually very popular in groups. Often times healing and supporting character gain exp faster later on in the game and have to struggle in the early stages. Sometimes they have extra weapons that are weak, such as maces or minor magic attacks. Use this class if you like being a team player, or if you have a group of friends that play.
- Rogues are usually the fast, high damage, low armour type. These are fun if you want to see lots of high-damage attacks. However, the low armour may be costly if you have to buy HP restorers. Use this class if you want to kill quickly and efficiently, and don't care about the money.
- Archers, like mages, attack from a range; but usually are weaker. To compensate, they usually have higher armour. Use this class if you are a new player and want to be safe from most attacks.
- Follow character build guides The more complex the character system of an RPG the easier it is to exploit but also to make mistakes that are hard or even impossible to correct later. When you experiment with the character system yourself you are bound to fall into these traps. Inform yourself about the best way to build up your character by reading message boards or talk with experienced players in-game (Warning: Don't rely on the opinions of single people. The person who told you might not be as experienced as he/she seems, might enjoy making a fool out of you or try to scam you. Get a confirmation from other people for every advice you get)
- Find the most efficient way to earn exp points It isn't important how much exp you get per killed enemy, per forged sword or per solved quest - it is important how much exp you get per minute. So try out different level areas or styles of playing with a notepad and a clock. Take notes about your exp sum before starting a specific way to level, how long you practiced it and how much exp you got afterwards. Divide the number of exp gained by the numbers of minutes played and you get the exp per minute rating. Repeat at different locations or with different styles of playing and compare the exp per minute ratings. Remember that when your character becomes stronger and learns new abilities you may have to reevaluate what leveling method is the best for you. Warning: Be aware of "hidden costs" like time to gain consumables or travel time.
Tips
- Team up with other players Most MMORPGs are designed to encourage team-play. When you play together with other people the exp per minute rating of all participants will usually increase a lot. It will also give you the opportunity to get gameplay hints from your party members. Most MMORPGs have a 'party' option, which also let's you quickly make friends. Last but not least, it is much more fun to have some company while grinding for 2 hours. To find a group ask other groups who seem to be about the same level as you if you can join them, ask single people if they want to form a group with you or just ask around in the public chat (remember to say what level and class you are). Don't send group invitations to random people without talking to them before. Doing so is considered rude in most games.
- Never get involved in other peoples fights unless asked Attacking monsters someone else is fighting with is considered kill-stealing in most MMORPGs and is forbidden or at least frowned upon. Even when it seems as if a character is running away in panic from a huge crowd of monsters he might indeed have the situation well under control. He might lure them to his party members (pulling) or try to get some distance so he can use ranged attacks (kiting). Unless a player is literally screaming for help don't bother getting involved. He brought it upon himself.
- Set goals for yourself. Get out some paper and write what you want to be done and maybe sooner than you think you can have those goals achieved. Don't make outrageous goals (Get to level 50 in a day). Sometimes, you can make smaller, achievable goals just to feel the warmth of an achievement.
- Play the game for your entertainment You've either paid for the game, are paying a subscription, or both. Play the game in the manner that entertains you, but attempt to game with like-minded players. If you're a player vs. player (PvP) gamer, you will likely upset the storyline-centric role-players by not acting in accordance with the story or playing in character. Role players will generally interact with the environment at a slower pace than player vs. environment (PvE) gamers and will move at a glacial pace to the PvP gamer.
- Be friendly and polite Remember - there are real people like you behind all the characters running around in the game. Try not to obstruct other people while playing. When you feel someone obstructs you assume it is a misunderstanding or clumsiness and not malicious intent. When people insult you, don't insult back - just ignore them. It's great when someone asks for a random friend invite because they think your personality is funny.
- Trade a lot with other people You can save and earn a lot of game money when you avoid dealing with NPC traders and make business with other players instead. People may pay good money for some items that seem worthless to you - inform yourself before selling stuff to NPCs. Before you buy new equipment from an NPC check if some other player might sell the same item to you for less. Look around the marketplace and try to find out how much your item(s) are worth. Don't be selling an old boot for 1,000,000 coins. After you bought new equipment try to sell your old gear to lower level players for more than the NPC would pay you. Be careful of scams.
- Loot & Rewards in groups Rewards for large kills is usually handed out to every player individually and the player is rewarded after simply participating or degree of importance in the battle. However, there may be loot/drop (weapon, armor, potions, scrolls, etc.) from kill on the ground or handed out after the match through a need/greed/pass-system. This loot is sometimes bound to one or more fighter-class,or FFA(Free For All). Unfortunately some people don`t know the difference on mine and yours, this stealing is called "ninja-looting". There is rarely any point in stealing other people's upgrades to get a few coins more; it will make you unpopular, kicked from group, blacklisted or even banned from the game if it happens enough. It's of course allowed to gather leftovers, but make sure you don't fall to far behind; wasting other people's time is frowned upon. In Guilds or regular friend-groups this rules is a bit looser at first, if you are noob (new to the game).
- Don't rush yourself. In most MMORPGs you won't get overpowered in a minute. But once you do get OP, it's great fun!
Warnings
- Be careful of scams that ask you for your password, or any personal information.
- Do not walk around calling people noobs for no reason. This makes you un-popular, ruins the game for yourself and others.
- Some people are just obnoxious idiots, don't get all mad and start swearing because they might report you. Your game will likely have an ignore function that you can populate with these people. Using this function will block the offending party's messages so they don't affect your game time.
