Choose an MMORPG
Choosing an MMORPG game is never easy. With hundreds out there, choosing what you like on the first pick will be impossible.
Steps
- Think about what you like in a game. Whether it be theme, features, camera/mobility features, etc. Make a list.
- Pick a few that are most important. There will never be a game that will fit perfectly. Many people suggest graphics and features as their top choices.
- Think about the payment model you prefer. There are basically 4 different payment models.
- Pay once - play forever. Some games want you to buy the game for the usual retail price of a single player game but don't charge you anymore later. This pricing model is interesting when you plan to play a game for a very long time. But it could prove to be very expensive when you decide that you don't like the game anymore after one or two months.
- Pay monthly. Many games want none or a very small entry fee, but charge you about $10 a month for playing. The advantage over the "pay once" price model is that you can stop playing whenever you like without feeling that you are wasting the money you paid on the game. On the other hand they can become much more expensive when you play the game for a half year or longer.
- Free to play but pay for goodies. These games are free to play but there is a cash shop where you can pay money for conveniences in the game. Be careful, these games seem cheap at first glance but can become really costly when you become addicted.
- All is Free. These games are wonderful and require no money to use all features. They can become addictive though, and are sometimes slower and less interesting than games which require monthly or yearly play. Two examples are VMK and Nicktropolis.
- Browse mega game sites like mmorpg.com or gamefaqs.com. These sites can help you because they have pictures and/or guides to the game. The guides will tell you exactly what you are looking for in terms of features.
- Make a list of games that look interesting. Gamefaqs has a top 10 guide; will probably find a couple of games that look very interesting and are quite good.
- Try them out. Don't get addicted though.
Tips
- Download "Flash Player". Many MMORPG's run on flash or Adobe Shockwave.
- Be patient. You might end up getting addicted to your "least favorite game" after you've tried 50 different games.
- Don't overdo yourself. Losing a game privilege is much worse than keeping it. Obviously.
Warnings
- Beware many MMORPGs are very addictive. Have some self control when managing your game play time.
- Monitors will hurt your eyes if you look at them too long! Take a break every hour and focus your eyes on a long distance for eye exercise. You don't want glasses, do you?
