Be a High School Basketball Coach

Getting into the position of a high school basketball coach is not easy, and will require lots of work or skill. If you are not skilled enough to play high school basketball, then you will need to show you can coach in other ways, which will require lots of hard work, and starting low.

Steps

Play Basketball at the High School Level

  1. Having any basketball experience is crucial to becoming a coach, but to be a successful coach most of the time you need some type of feel for the high school and higher game.
  2. If you are not skilled enough to make your high school basketball team it would be wise to somehow get involved with the program, whether it be by being the team manager, or stat-keeper, but somehow you need to show the coach you want to learn even if you aren't skilled enough to play on the team.
  3. Back to step 1, even if you are given the opportunity to play on the team you must show that you have some type of basketball IQ to coach at the high school level. You can be the best athlete in the school, but there might be someone on the team that is better for the team because he is smarter with the actual game.

Work Hard for Your Opportunity

  1. This method requires you taking your lumps and building off of them. You might have to start by coaching at a recreation center league, or maybe a really young AAU team. Anyone that has coached at these levels know that sometimes it can be like pulling teeth.
  2. Once you have proven that you can work well with the kids and parents, that you show you care about your kids, and most importantly that you are encouraging as much as possible, then you might start getting looked at my various schools, which might mean a middle school.
  3. Say you have been hired by a middle school to coach basketball, now you must prove you can do all the things listed in step 2, all while having some type of success with your team. This might be one of the toughest things to get by because you are dealing with the immaturity of middle schoolers, so you have to teach them how to be a better person and basketball player at the same time.

Have a Connection

  1. In the AAU circuit, having connections is one of the most important things about landing a solid coaching job. Having the right connections can be the difference from coaching at the middle school to the high school. If you ever have the chance to coach AAU, take time in introducing yourself to other coaches, and let them know that you are hopeful that one day you can coach high school basketball. This is because there are lots of high school coaches that coach AAU teams.
