Be a Pastel Goth
Want to look like one of those ultra trendy pastel goths with the pastel hair and inverted crosses? Read on to learn how to achieve this look!
Steps
- Hair: Coloring your hair is optional, but can greatly enhance your pastel goth appearance. If you choose to color your hair, choose either a black, platinum blonde (nearly white), or pastel color. Pastel colors include lilac, lavender, mint, baby blue, baby pink, or a combination. To dye your hair pastel, put a ton of white conditioner and a drop of concentrated color. You can add more to make it darker. As for styling, the bigger the better. Hair can be straightened, braided, curled, etc., but must be big and long. If you do not already have voluminous or long hair, this can be achieved through hair extensions. Accessories, such as bone clips and skeleton hands are often worn in the hair.
- Makeup: Skin is usually matte. You can set it with a good powder or just get a matte foundation. Bare eyes with black eyeliner on top and white eyeliner on bottom are very prevalent among pastel goths. Pastel and natural colored eyeshadows can also be used. Be sure to use heavy mascara or fake eyelashes. Any shade of blush can be used, but be sure not to overdo it. Dark colored lipsticks, such as black, plum, burgundy, or deep purple will greatly enhance your pastel goth look, but any shade of lipstick can be used. Nude lipstick and heavy bronzers are not recommended.
- Clothing: Graphics, such as crosses and skulls often come with the territory, and can be incorporated into t-shirts, blouses, skirts, etc. Button up blouses, oversized, long t-shirts and sweaters, maxi skirts, denim and leather vests and jackets, dip-dyed shorts, leopard print, pastel, colorful, and black denim, and anything with leather, studs/spikes, and lace are staples among pastel goths. Stores such as Nasty Gal, Dolls Kill, Nikki Lipstick, Runway Dreamz, and Wildfox are just a few places where one can find pastel goth-inspired clothing.
- Shoes: Anything with studs and spikes can be used for your pastel goth look. Platforms, leather boots, and creepers are also standard among pastel goths. Jeffrey Campbell Litas, Matiko Lilos, and UNIF Hellraisers are very popular shoes with pastel goths.
- Jewelry: Pastel goths generally don't attack themselves with piles of jewelry and generally wear a few pieces at a time. Short, chunky necklaces are preferred instead of long pendants. Jewelry including heavy chains, pearls, and stones can be used. Colorful, pastel "kawaii" jewelry can also be used. Tarina Tarantino-like jewelry is great for this look.
- Piercings/Tattoos: Unlike most other alternative styles, tattoos and piercings are not highly recommended in the pastel goth style. A few elegant tattoos or non-facial piercings can be incorporated into the look, but covering yourself in metal and ink is not recommended.
- Music: Give genres like gothic rock, post-punk, new-wave,darkwave, synthpop, deathrock, dark cabaret, glam rock, and some punk rock a try. Bands such as Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, Joy Division, The March Violets, Tones on Tail, Depeche Mode, Switchblade Symphony, Alien Sex Fiend, Specimen, Christian Death, Clan of Xymox, Love and Rockets, Rasputina, Voltaire, Creature Feature, Rosetta Stone, Sisters of Mercy, and The 69 Eyes are good examples. Although, you can still listen to other styles of music, like pop or blues.
- Create a Tumblr: The majority of pastel goths use tumblr on a regular basis. Give yours a cute layout and be sure to follow other pastel goth-inspired blogs.
- Always be Polite: Although a person's demeanor varies greatly from person to person, the majority of pastel goths are Act Coy, polite, and cute. Do not try to be intimidating, and always mind your manners. Pastel goths are often very soft spoken, but love to have fun when the time is right.
Tips
- Don't change drastically. Styles are meant to be inspired by, not copied. Try to change slowly but surely, until you are where you want to be.
- If you plan on dying your hair a pastel color, make sure you bleach it to at least a Level 8 and mix a dime size amount of hair color into a half cup of conditioner.
- If you are interested in Goth as a subculture, educate yourself about its origin. Do not pretend to be part of the subculture purely because this style has the word "goth" in it.
