Be a Sidewalk Artist

The sidewalk artist is an artist who brings joy into the day of passersby, adding art to an otherwise dull path that often leads people to work and back home again. By adding some color and artistic commentary, you can add vibrancy to a neighborhood and cheer up the souls who walk on by.

Steps

Drawing on the sidewalk

  1. Find out where to it is okay to do sidewalk art. It may not be permitted in some areas, due to amenity or safety laws, so be sure to read up on local laws or phone up and find out before you choose your area.
  2. Select a suitable spot. Once you know it's legal and fine to use an area, look for a suitable surface. The best sidewalk will be smooth and without holes, cracks or unevenness. Another thing to consider is where the pedestrians are walking; it's not helpful to get in their way while creating your work of art, so bear this in mind when choosing a suitable spot.
    • Sidewalks near parks can be a nice choice. Parks often bring out the best in people and seeing art will add to the whole pleasant atmosphere of being near nature and greenery.
  3. Start out small. With a lot of chalk (and a lot of patience) draw out some cool designs or patterns on the sidewalk.

Selling your other paintings or artwork

  1. Consider pairing your sidewalk art with sales for art that people can purchase from you. After you've gained some attention, go a little farther. Set up a little "camp" for yourself (your art supplies), and start painting/drawing.
  2. Show off your artwork. Display your finished pieces on stands, and let people admire your good job.
  3. Take requests. If you think you can handle it. Offer to draw a cartoon version of people for a small fee.

Tips

  • Always make sure you're not violating any laws while you are out.
  • Set up a schedule for when you arrive at your "camp". That way, you can properly rest, and people know when you're going to show up.

Warnings

  • If you violate a law, you may get cited/charged.
  • It may be a while before you get any serious attention. Have patience.
