Steps

1. Search Google, Yahoo, or Bing for local Advertising and Publishing Companies.
2. Call the companies you find and ask if they offer internships or volunteer positions.
3. Once working as an Intern or Volunteer, do a good job and aim for accomplishments. Let accomplishments be noteworthy.
4. Network with your boss and leaders of the company, from the managers up to the vice presidents and president position.
5. Request for recommendations at the end of internship or volunteer work.
6. Look and apply for full-time or part-time art director job opening positions within the company that hired you as an intern or volunteer. If there are no full-time art director job openings within the company, search other related companies for these openings.
