Be a Successful Professional or Budding Interior Designer

Being an interior designer is a rewarding job/hobby. Many people have a knack for designing but don't want to go through the hassle of design school. With these tips, you'll be on your way to becoming a professional designer. If you already are a pro, these tips will help enhance your business/quality of the designing that you do.

Steps

  1. Get to know your client. Interview them and find out what their ideal room would be, what colors they like, what would be their inspiration, etc. Make sure that you know what THEY want not only what you want, and that every one is on the same page.
  2. Be polite, professional and fun. Nobody wants a boring, drab, dull interior designer. Make the client feel like your a close friend but still be professional.
  3. Have the client set a budget. Even though at first, it might seem impossible to stick to a tight budget and still make a great room, in the end you'll be left with a happy client, and a happy you. You can shop at second hand shops, refurbish furniture that the client already has, and still have room to splurge on some items.
  4. Use color contrast. An easy and typical technique is to use colors that compliment each other. If you try to match too well, it can be very overwhelming. A good tip is to use colors opposite on the color wheel, such as blue and orange.
  5. Watch HGTV. HGTV is a television channel that is all about home improvement, design, real estate, etc. There, you can get many tips, ideas, and inspiration for room design.

Tips

  • Have the client go out of the house for the last couple of days, so when they come back, they will have a nice surprise.
  • Use the color and style that the client has around the house for inspiration.
  • Have the client help. That way, they will feel like they did something to make the room better, and they will know how to do it in the future.

Warnings

  • Don't go over the top unless that is what the client wants.
  • Surprises are always great ( a family portrait blown up and made as a feature wall, an old blanket or piece of fabric that belonged to the client made as a pillow cover, etc.) but make sure that it is what they want first without giving the surprise away.
  • Make sure to balance out what you as the professional knows will look great and what the client wants to avoid an unhappy client.
  • Always make sure to have a contractor with you if you are an interior designer.
