Be a Unique Writer

Being a writer can be a very daunting task, especially when you are a beginner. In fact, all amateur writers experience serious writer's blocks and that sometimes could waste a lot of time. If you are creative enough and are willing to take some time, you can find your own solutions to problems and become unique yourself. Here are some ways that might help you get started.

Steps

  1. Free-write on a topic of your choice. Free-writing can help create ideas for a new story and can help get your creative juices flowing.
  2. Use writing prompts. Using prompts as a guide can quickly put you on the path to writing new, unique ideas on your own. Better, yet, instead of searching for prompts online, create the prompts yourself, and then write a story to go with them.
  3. Keep a dream journal. Every time you wake up, take a few minutes to write in a notebook about what you remember of your dreams last night. The notebook and pencil should be right next to your bed so that you don't waste any time getting things down. The subconscious mind is incredibly creative. Who knows, you could transform what seemed like a silly dream into the next bestseller!
  4. Search for tutorial books. There are many books on how to be a creative and unique writer. If you can't find any books, search the Internet for articles on how to be a creative and unique writer.
  5. Notice your surroundings. Jot them down in a notebook to potentially help with a new story. You can find great inspiration anywhere in the world.
  6. Avoid sounding like other people or reusing other phrases you've heard. Try not to use jokes that you've read in joke books or quotes that you heard other people say on television.
    • If you've found an excellent writer in the past, it's okay to look at what they do differently and imitate that to improve your own writing, but don't totally imitate them.
  7. Read other genres outside of your own. Sure, we all have things that we are better and worse at writing, and things we enjoy reading more than others. But by reading things you aren't so familiar with, you get a better picture of all that's out there, and you can create a work that is totally your own.
  8. Read books inside your genre. It's just as important to get a scope of what's inside your genre as it is to get a bigger understanding of the whole picture.
  • If you don't know where to look for new books, look at an online shopping store, such as Amazon. Type in the title of an amazing book you've read recently, and check the books frequently purchased with that one and any recommendations. See if they have any of these books at your local library.
  • Check out the classics. Is 801 your thing? You have to have heard of Junjo Romantica by now. (the first twelve volumes have been translated into English.) Fantasy? Harry Potter, as well as the Chronicles of Narnia. Geometry? Euclid's Elements. Horror? Stephen King, or Goosebumps if you're younger. There are a few groundbreaking writers in every genre. Maybe the next one will be you!
  1. Keep a notebook with you at all times. Next to you when you sleep, on the train, at the pool, everywhere. Ideas only stay with you for so long.
