If you really truly want to be and act emo, first you should decide why you are doing this. Decide if a) you are trying to fit in to a certain stereotype/group or clique, b) you are into the music and want to add the effect of looking the part, or c) you like the style. If you picked b or c, then continue reading. If not, you should probably figure out why you are really doing this then read on.

Steps

  1. Figure out why you are wanting to do this. If you're just trying to fit into a group then you should probably stop reading. But if you're doing this because you like the style and the music then please keep reading.
  2. Find out what emo really means. Emo stands for emotive which is short for emotive hardcore. A style of music started in the mid 80's. Emo was started in Washington D.C by bands like Rites of Spring and Embrace. It is characterized by expressive and sometimes confessional lyrics.
  3. Get in to the music. Listen to bands such as Jimmy Eat World, Thursday, Sunny Day Real Estate, Pierce The Veil, Black Veil Brides, Matchbook Romance, Texas is the Reason, All Time Low, My Chemical Romance, The Pretty Reckless, Evanescence, and so on..
  4. Get the style. 'Emo' style is usually characterized by tight jeans, band tee's, studded belts and converse shoes. These items of clothing are not necessary. Emo is mostly about being yourself so if you want to wear tight jeans and band tees, go ahead. But it's okay to wear other things. Accessories include piercings and tattoos, but these are not necessary.
    • Get the hair. Emo hair is usually black or dark brown. Blonde is okay only if the cut is right. It usually consists of bangs covering the face, cut to about the shoulders. Sometimes, people will tease their hair. Others dye their hair different colors.
  5. Be yourself. Don't be something you're not.
  6. Not all 'emo' people are depressed. You don't have to be depressed to be emo. If you are feeling depressed or suicidal, consult a doctor. These things are serious.
  7. You should probably make this transition over summer break to avoid being called a poser or wannabe. Doing this over the summer will not guarantee not being called a poser but will definitely lower the chance of being called one.
  8. Lastly. Your parents will probably question why you are stating to wear darker clothes and makeup. Sit them down and explain that just because you are changing and starting to like different things that it doesn't mean that you are a totally different person. You're still their child and you still love them. Also make this transition slowly will probably help them get used to it.
