Become a Hairdressing Assessor

A hairdressing assessor is an individual who provides guidance to students who are training to be hairdressers. Hairdressing assessors are charged with guiding their students through the successful completion of their National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) training, among other duties, and must secure qualifications beyond those required of hairdressers.

Steps

1. Become a salon apprentice. Apprenticeships provide practical, hands-on experience that can be used to gain your hairdressing NVQ.
   • Contact the National Apprenticeship Helpline or contact employers to inquire about openings for apprenticeships. Your local newspaper and the Internet are also good tools for securing apprenticeships.
2. Enroll in a foundation degree program in hairdressing. You will take courses while working your apprenticeship.

   • Earning a foundation degree in hairdressing as a full-time student typically takes 2 years.
   • Earning a foundation degree in hairdressing as a part-time student typically takes 3 to 4 years.
   • Obtain information about application procedures and the coursework offered as part of the program.
   • Follow all application procedures carefully.
   • Submit completed application.
3. Earn an NVQ qualification in hairdressing. These are earned through workplace-based assessments.
4. Earn your A1 NVQ Assessor award. This may be achieved from a number of institutions or online.
   • Become familiar with the requirements for achieving your A1 NVQ Assessor award.
   • Research options for obtaining your A1 NVQ Assessor award.
   • Select a program that meets your needs and schedule.
   • Carefully follow all instructions for completing and submitting your application.
5. Earn your PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) qualification. This qualification may be achieved from a variety of institutions or online.
   • Obtain familiarity with the requirements for achieving your PTLLS qualification.
   • Research options for obtaining your PTLLS.
   • Select a program that meets your needs and schedule.
   • Carefully follow all instructions for completing and submitting your application.

• An A1 NVQ Assessor qualification means that an individual is qualified to assess candidates based on a predefined set of competency standards via a number of methods, to give candidates feedback based on their assessment, as well as to participate in internal review processes.
• PTLLS education prepares individuals to provide instruction to students, whether it is in a classroom workplace setting. The PTLLS qualification is required for teachers, assessors and trainers.
• NVQ Level 3 is typically the preferable level to achieve as a hairdresser, particularly for someone who aspires to become a hairdressing assessor. This level is also required if you want to manage or own your own salon.
• Foundation degrees are specifically designed higher education degrees that provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to perform successfully within their chosen career field.
• NVQ stands for national vocational qualifications. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, NVQ's are earned through work-based assessment and training. To achieve the desired NVQ, an individual must prove they are capable of performing the duties of their chosen field. There are five NVQ levels, with Level 1 being the most basic and Level 5 being equivalent to senior management.
