Become an Assessor in the UK

An assessor is someone that assesses vocational qualifications in the workplace. It involves supporting the student with study tasks, and assessing competence and skills in the workplace. Assessors may visit students within healthcare settings, childcare settings, construction environments, hospitality roles, hairdressing environments, and many others.

Steps

  1. Gain a qualification, minimum of level 3, in the vocational subject, such as health and social care. The knowledge from this course is vital to support the student as they undertake a course in the same subject area.
  2. Get experience. Vocational experience in the appropriate field, of normally 2-3 years, and occasionally managerial experience, is also needed to become an assessor. This enables extra knowledge needed to support the student within the field, such as being a nursery nurse to support students undertaking childcare qualifications.
  3. Find out what choices there are for qualifications. A1 is a formal qualification needed to be an assessor, however other equivalent qualifications are available. Often 'assessor training' qualifications require teaching or assessing experience, which can often not be gained without the qualification - creating a slight dilemma. However, there are 'knowledge-only' awards available which require no teaching/assessing experience.
  4. Find training. Assessor training can be done through distance learning, via online training sites, or part-time through a local college.

Tips

  • It may be worthwhile gaining some voluntary experience, shadowing a trained assessor, before entering a new career, to ensure it is the right choice for you!
