Become an Ultrasound Service Technician

Working as an ultrasound service technician can be an exciting and rewarding career choice for many people who already work in the field of maintenance, mechanics, or service repair. An ultrasound service technician is someone who repairs and services ultrasound machines. This is not to be confused with an ultrasound technician, who actually performs the ultrasounds in a clinical setting. If you are good with your hands and working with machines and you have a desire to work in a medical/clinical setting, this may be the career move for you.

Steps

  1. Consider this field if you are handy and have allied experience. If you are already a service repair technician or mechanic or in a similar field, the transition to becoming an ultrasound service technician will feel natural.
    • If you do not have experience in any of these fields, especially if you do not have experience working at all, it is best to first get experience working as a general service repair technician. Then it is easier and more appropriate to enter this highly specialized field.
  2. Research and find an accredited school. There are very few schools which have accredited training for ultrasound service technicians, so you may be restricted to finding one in a big city.
  3. Complete the schooling required for an ultrasound service technician. Be aware that this is likely not the end of your formal training. To reach and stay at the top of your chosen field, you will need to actively pursue additional training throughout your career and stay abreast of developments in this fast-advancing field.
  4. Augment your formal training. Learn everything you can about the inner and outer workings of the ultrasound machines, including different brands, types, and designs of ultrasound machines.
  5. Decide whether you want to work as an employee or as an independent contractor.
  6. Put your name out there. Contact companies that sell and service ultrasound machines. Contact hospitals, clinics, imaging centers, and ultrasound clinics.

Tips

  • Currently, there are very few (one or two) ultrasound service technicians in the Chicagoland area, and extremely few ultrasound service technicians nationwide. The demand is huge. If you play your cards right, you can have an excellent salary and lifestyle while in this career field.
  • It is easy to carry your skills over to become an MRI service technician with some additional training.
  • 3D ultrasounds are the current leading edge of the ultrasound machines. Learn how to service and repair 3D ultrasounds to put yourself above the rest.
  • As the use of 3D ultrasounds increases, there will be a growing demand for ultrasound service technicians.

Warnings

  • Do not attempt to market yourself as an ultrasound service technician if you do not have the proper training, knowledge, and certification.
