Blacklist on Tumblr

If you're tired of dealing with certain content when you visit Tumblr, there are ways to blacklist that content and block it from your dash. Tumblr has a built-in feature that allows you to ignore specific users and blogs. If you want to blacklist certain tags and keywords, though, you'll need to use a third party extension.

Steps

Method One: Ignore Users on Tumblr

  1. Log into Tumblr. Go to the Tumblr homepage. If you aren't already logged in, do so now by entering your e-mail address and password. Click the "Log in" button to continue.
  2. Access your settings. Take a look at the top bar of your Tumblr dashboard. The "Settings" option is represented by a gear icon. Click this icon to continue.[1]
    • Once you click on this icon, you should be redirected to the account settings page.
  3. Find the "Ignored users" button. This button should be located near the bottom of the account settings screen, to the left of the "Delete account" and "Save" buttons. Click on "Ignored users" to continue.
    • Alternatively, you can take a shortcut to the "Ignored Users" page by accessing it directly at: tumblr.com/ignore
      • Note that you will still need to log into your Tumblr account, even if you access the page directly at the above URL.
  4. Enter the username. You should see a box with the instructions, "Enter the URL or username of a tumblr blog to ignore. Click in the box and type the appropriate information.[2]
    • You can enter either the entire blog address you wish to ignore (EXAMPLE-NAME.tumblr.com) or the username alone (EXAMPLE-NAME).
  5. Hit the ignore button. Click on the blue "Ignore" button beside the username box. Doing so adds that user to your "Ignore" list.
    • A list of Tumblr users currently being ignored should appear beneath the entry field on the "Ignored Users" page.
    • If you make a mistake or change your mind about ignoring someone, you can undo this action by clicking on the "Stop Ignoring" button beside that person's username on your "Ignored Users" list.
    • Once you ignore someone, you'll no longer see his or her posts on your Tumblr feed, nor will you see any comments that user makes elsewhere on the website. That user will not be able to see your posts or send you messages from his or her account, either.

Method Two: Blacklist Tags with Tumblr Savior Extension

  1. Download Tumblr Savior. Tumblr Savior is a free, third party browser extension you can use to hide Tumblr posts tagged with certain words or phrases. You'll need to download the extension before continuing.
  2. Open your Tumblr Savior settings. From your Internet browser, access the the Tumblr Savior extension and navigate to the extension's settings.
    • Look for the Tumblr Savior icon on your browser toolbar. It should look like a black capital "T" in a tilted white box. Clicking on the icon should take you directly to the extension's settings.[4]
    • If you do not see the icon on your browser toolbar, you may need to navigate to the extensions list in your browser and select "Tumblr Savior" from the list to access its settings.
  3. Type the tags into the "Black List" boxes. On the main page of the extension, you should see one or more text boxes beneath the words "Black List." Type the tags you wish to blacklist directly into these boxes.
    • The tags you'll need to block will vary depending on what you don't want to see.
    • The extension will check the whole post for the word or phrase you input, so you'll need to choose carefully. If you only want to block posts using that keyword as a tag, make sure that you type a hashtag (#) before the keyword itself.
    • To add more tags once you run out of boxes, click on the "add" button beneath the bottom text box.
  4. Click "Save." Once you've added all the tags you wish to blacklist, click on the "Save" button to complete the process.
    • Note that you may need to close and re-open your browser for the settings to take effect.
    • The extension should block any posts containing your blacklisted tags from appearing on your dash. For instance, if you blocked "nsfw," any post containing the keyword "nsfw" will be collapsed and hidden from your main view.

Method Three: Blacklist Tags with XKit Extension

  1. Download XKit. XKit is a free, third party extension that attaches itself to the actual framework of Tumblr. You'll need to download this extension before continuing further.
    • Go to the official installation webpage and click on the download or installation link provided. The webpage will automatically detect your browser and provide the appropriate version based on that. Note that XKit is currently available for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.
    • Find the download page here: http://xkit.info/seven/download/
    • After downloading the extension, close and re-open your browser. You should then be able to continue with the remaining instructions.
  2. Navigate to Tumblr. Go to the Tumblr homepage. If you aren't already signed into your account, do so now.
  3. Open XKit in Tumblr. Look for the XKit icon at the top of your Tumblr dash. Click on the button to open your XKit settings.
    • The XKit icon looks like a series of overlapping x's centered across a circle. It will usually be located next to the power icon.
  4. Install "Blacklist" from the extensions. Blacklist isn't automatically installed when you download the XKit app. You'll need to specifically install that feature from within your XKit settings.[5]
    • Look at the bottom of your XKit panel. You should see the "Get Extensions" tab. Click on that tab to open it.
    • From within the "Get Extensions" tab, use the search box to locate the "Blacklist" extension.
    • Once you find the "Blacklist" extension, click on the "Install" button beneath it. Follow any on-screen instructions to install the blacklist feature.
  5. Open XKit again, if necessary. You should still be in XKit after installing "Blacklist," but if you accidentally click out of it, you'll need to open XKit again.
    • As before, click on the XKit icon at the top of your Tumblr dash.
  6. Navigate to the blacklist app. Click on the "My XKit" tab at the bottom of the XKit panel to open the main settings portion of the extension, and select "Blacklist" from the resulting side panel.[6]
    • Note that "My XKit" is the first tab and should open by default when you first access your XKit settings.
    • Once you click on "Blacklist," your blacklist settings should appear. You can change your interface options, if desired, but doing so is not necessary if you only want to add words to your blacklist.
    • When the shortcut is enabled, you can get to your blacklist quicker by simply hitting "ALT" + "B" on your keyboard. You'll need to specifically enable that feature within the blacklist settings before you can use it, though.
  7. Add tags and keywords. At the bottom of the "Blacklist" window, you should see a menu that allows you to add tags to your blacklist. Type the tags into the field one by one.
    • Choose your tags based on the type of content you wish to block.
    • Note that the app will automatically scan the entire post for the keywords you input. If you only want to block posts that use a specific keyword or phrase as a tag, you will need to type a hashtag (#) before the keyword itself.
  8. Save your changes. When you've added all your keywords and tags, click on "Save" and return to your Tumblr dash.
    • You may or may not need to refresh Tumblr before your changes will be made.
    • After adding keywords to your blacklist, the extension should block any posts containing the terms and phrases you chose. For example, if you added "nsfw" to your blacklist, any post containing "nsfw" somewhere within the title, body, or tags will be collapsed and hidden from your dash.
