Block Emails

Emails are a great way to stay in touch, but what happens if you accidentally give your email to the wrong person? SPAM. To fight this, almost all email providers allow you to filter and block messages from specific senders. If you’re sick of your inbox filling up every day from unwanted messages, follow this guide to block those emails for good.

Steps

Gmail

  1. Click the Gear button and select Settings. Gmail does not have a traditional Block option; instead, you will be creating a quick filter that will automatically move messages from the specified sender to the Trash.
    • You can also use an email block extension, available in the Google Chrome or Firefox extension stores. Some of these require payment for use beyond the an initial limit, but they are capable of making blocking easier. Check out the options and read the reviews before installing, if you want an easier Gmail blocking approach.
  2. Click the Filters tab. Click the “Create a new filter” link at the bottom of the page. You may have to scroll down to find it.
    • You can also create a filter from any email. Open the email and then press the More action button above the message. Then, in the list of options, pick Filter message like these.
  3. Enter the settings for your filter. Gmail filters are very powerful. You can enter a single address, addresses separated by commas, or entire domains by including the last part of the email, after the “@” symbol. When done, select "Create filter with this search."
  4. Select the desired actions for messages by checking the boxes you want. Check the “Mark as read” and “Delete it” options to have the mail skip the inbox upon arrival and be sent directly to the trash. When ready, press Create filter and all future emails from that sender will be sent straight to the trash[1]
    • Check the Apply filter to matching conversations to clean previous messages that match your filter from your inbox.

Yahoo! Mail

  1. Sign in to your Yahoo! Account. Type in your Yahoo! ID and password.
  2. From the Yahoo! Homepage, click on Mail. This will open your Yahoo! Mail account.
  3. Click the gear icon in the top right corner. Click Settings in the menu that appears.
  4. Select "Blocked Addresses". Type in the email address you would like to block and click the Block button.
    • Tip: You can block up to 500 email addresses on one account. All messages received from the sender will be immediately deleted, and won’t bounce back as undeliverable.
    • You can block entire domains by entering the domain address into the filter. This is useful if you continue to receive spam from different usernames under the same domain. The domain is the address after the “@” symbol.[2]
    • To remove an address from the blocked list, highlight it and click the Remove button.

Outlook.com

  1. Click the Settings button. This is shaped like a gear, and is located in the upper-right corner of your Outlook.com window. Select “More mail settings”.
  2. Click the "Safe and blocked senders" link. This is located under the "Preventing junk mail" section.
  3. Click the "Blocked senders" link. This will open a new page where you can add specific addresses to be blocked.
  4. Enter in the address or domain that you want to block. The domain is the part of the email address after the "@" symbol, and adding just a domain will block all email addresses that use it. Once you've entered in the address that you want to block, click the Add to list >> button.
    • Certain domains cannot be blocked. In order to block these domains, open the "More mail settings" window and select "Rules for sorting new messages". Click the "New" button and then select "Sender’s address contains". Type in the domain that you want to block. Check the "Delete these messages" box and then click Save.[3]

iCloud Mail

  1. Sign into your iCloud account.
  2. Select Mail from the main menu.
  3. Click the Settings button. It is shaped like a gear, and is located in the bottom left corner of the iCloud window. Select “Rules”.
  4. Click the “Add a Rule” link.
  5. Enter the email address that you wish to block. Advanced Tip: Type a website domain (which is the part of the address after the “@” symbol, for example, Facebook.com) to block all email addresses from that domain. [4]
  6. Select “Move to Trash”. This will automatically place any messages received from that address directly into your Trash. They will not appear in your inbox.
  7. Click “Done” to save the rule. Now you can add more.
  8. How to remove a rule: Click the (i) box on the right side of the rule. This will open the Edit menu. Press Delete to remove the rule.

Outlook Express

  1. Select an email from the address you would like to block. Make sure that you click on it to highlight it.
  2. Right-click on the email title from this sender. Then, a menu will appear.
  3. Hover your cursor over "Junk E-mail". Select "Add Sender to Blocked Senders List".
    • This will block all incoming messages from the specified sender regardless of whether you choose "Yes" or "No" when prompted.

Mozilla Thunderbird

  1. Select a message from the sender that you want to block. Right-click on the sender’s address at the top of the mail, and select “Create Filter From” from the menu that appears.
    • The filter editor will open with the sender’s address already filled in.
  2. Give the filter a name. When the filter editor opens, you can name your filter to something like “Block list” so that you can easily find it again.
  3. Set the filter to “Match any of the following”. This will allow the filter to work when multiple addresses are added to it.
  4. Change the action to "Delete Message". You can find this menu in the "Perform these actions" section of the filter window. Click OK to save your filter. All messages from address will be immediately deleted.
  5. Add more addresses. If you want to expand your block list, click the "Tools" menu and select "Message filters". Select your "Block list" filter and click the "+" button. Add each email or domain individually.[5]



Tips

  • If you use a private domain host for your email service, you may need to contact the provider to determine the best way to block an email address.
