Block a Phone Number

The process for blocking calls will vary depending on what kind of phone you're using. iPhones and some Android phones can block phone numbers natively. There are plenty of Android apps that can block calls as well. If you're getting lots of Unknown or Private Number calls, you'll need to contact your carrier to see what blocking options they offer. If you have a landline, your carrier may offer several different blocking options. You can also put your phone number on your country's Do Not Call list, which will prevent telemarketers from getting your number.

Steps

iPhone

  1. Add the number you want to block to your Contacts. You can only select from your contacts list when blocking a number, so add the number that you want to block.
  2. Open the Settings app. You can block calls directly from your iPhone, as long as your using an iPhone 4 or newer, running iOS 7 or later.
  3. Select "Phone" from the Settings app. This will open your phone options.
  4. Select "Blocked." You'll see a list of any numbers currently blocked.
  5. Tap "Add New." This will let you add new numbers to the list.
  6. Select the contact that you want to block. Select the contact that you created with the number that you want to block.
  7. Block "Unknown" or "Blocked Number" calls using Do Not Disturb. While iOS doesn't have a built-in way to block unknown callers, you can use the Do Not Disturb function. Note that while this will allow people on your contacts list to contact you, numbers not in your contacts list will be blocked, even if they are legitimate calls.[1]
    • Open the Settings app.
    • Select "Do Not Disturb."
    • Toggle Manual ON.
    • Tap "Allow Calls From" and choose "All Contacts."
  8. Contact your carrier for more advanced blocking. If you want to block unknown numbers or need more robust blocking features, you'll need to contact your carrier's Customer Service department. Your blocking options will vary depending on your specific carrier and cell phone plan.

Android (Samsung, HTC, and LG)

  1. Open the Phone app. If you're using a Samsung Galaxy, HTC, or LG device, you'll be able to add numbers to a list that will be automatically blocked or rejected. This feature is built-in to these devices. All three start from the Phone app.[2]
    • If you are using an Android phone from another manufacturer, or want to block unknown callers, see the next section.
  2. Block calls on a Samsung. Once you've opened the Phone app, you can block calls from most Samsung devices:
    • Tap the More button (⋮) and select "Settings."
    • Tap "Call blocking" or "Call rejection" (the option will vary depending on your model).
    • Tap "Block list" or "Auto reject list."
    • Add numbers that you want to block. You can also add numbers from the phone's Log. Select a number that called you, tap ⋮, and then tap "Block settings."
  3. Block calls on an HTC. After opening the Phone app, you can block numbers from your call history.
    • Swipe over to the "Call History" tab.

Any Android

  1. Download a call blocking app. There are a variety of apps that can block calls on your Android device. These can be useful if your device doesn't support blocking calls natively, or you want to block calls from unknown or blocked calls. Some of the more popular apps include:
    • Mr. Number
    • Call Blocker
    • Should I Answer?
    • Extreme Call Blocker
  2. Launch the blocking app. The process for blocking numbers will vary depending on the app you are using, but generally they're all fairly similar.
  3. Open the Settings section of the app. You can generally block unknown and blocked numbers through the settings section of the blocking app.
  4. Choose to block private and unknown numbers. You can typically find these options in the app's settings. This will block calls from numbers that appear "Private" or "Unknown" on your caller ID.
  5. Add specific numbers to your blocking list. You can use the app to add specific numbers or people from your contacts list. This will block these callers from being able to reach you.
  6. Change your scheduling options. Many blocking apps allow you to set scheduling options for your blocking. You can do this to block all calls during specific hours.
  7. Contact your carrier for other blocking options. If the apps aren't working well enough for your needs, you can contact your carrier and inquire about their blocking options. You may be able to reject all unknown calls or add numbers to a block list.
    • Note that many prepaid plans do not offer the same blocking options that traditional plans do.

Windows Phone

  1. Open the Phone app. You can block any number that has called you. You cannot block unknown or private numbers unless you contact your carrier.
  2. Swipe to the History page. This will show all of the calls you have recently received.
  3. Press and hold the number you want to block. A menu will appear after a moment.
  4. Tap "Block number." The number will be added to your block list.[3]
    • You can see a list of your blocked calls by tapping the "..." button in the Phone app and selecting "blocked calls."
  5. Contact your carrier for more blocking tools. Your carrier will have much more sophisticated blocking options than you have on your phone. Call the Customer Service line to see what blocking options are available for your plan.

Landlines

  1. Contact your carrier. Call blocking for landlines is a carrier-side feature. To enable it, you'll need to contact your phone carrier and see what options are available to you.
  2. Check into Anonymous Call Rejection. This feature will allow you to reject private and blocked calls. The feature may cost extra, depending on your carrier.
  3. Add numbers to your block list. Most carriers allow you to block specific numbers if you're getting harassed by someone. The process varies depending on your carrier.
    • For example, if you have AT&T or Verizon home phone service, you can dial *60 and then add follow the spoken instructions to a number to your block list.
  4. Look into Priority Ringing. This feature may allow you to change your phone's ring for certain numbers, allowing you to determine if you want to answer it.

"Do Not Call" Registry

  1. Add your number to your country's Do Not Call registry. Adding your number to this list will prevent telemarketers from being able to call you. You may still receive legitimate business and political calls.
