Braid Your Own Tie Belts

Ever wanted to make your own clothes, but lacked the materials or the skills? A fun, easy thing to do that will also meet your desires is to braid your own belts. They can be braided loose or tight, colorful or plain. It's all up to you!

Steps

  1. Buy several different colors of yarn, or one spool of multi-colored yarn. Whatever you like best.
  2. Cut three equal lengths of yarn. Keep in mind that you are making a belt, so get lengths that will go around your waist with about a foot to spare.
  3. Tie the three lengths together at the top.
  4. Start braiding! Braid tightly or loosely -- it's all up to you.
  5. After you've done that, repeat steps 2, 3, and 4 two more times.
  6. By now, you should have three braided strands. Braid them together so you have one big braid.
  7. Repeat steps 2 to 6 two more times. You should now have three big braids. Braid them together you you have one really big braid.
  8. If you aren't satisfied, continue in the same pattern. Proudly wear your handmade belt!

Tips

  • The belts look cooler if you leave some loose yarn at the ends when you tie the knots. The effect looks like a fringe.
  • Several colors braided together looks best, be creative!
  • If you braid tightly, you will need more sets of yarn to make a nice, full belt.
  • Try to use very common colors that you wear often, so you don't have to make a new belt for each outfit.

Warnings

  • Don't braid colors that don't look good together.
  • It can often take a couple of months to make one belt, especially if you don't have much free time.

Things You'll Need
