Buy Fuel Treatments

There is much confusion when it comes to fuel additives you can buy at the store. There are many products available and it may be difficult to determine which one is right for your car. This article will tell you how to buy fuel treatments for your vehicle.

Steps

  1. Determine which fuel system components need extra cleaning or benefits from fuel additives. A qualified mechanic can help you with this assessment.
    • Most of these treatments are designed to remove deposits that can cause your vehicle to hesitate, run rough or have difficulty starting.
  2. Select a fuel cleaner/treatment that is designed for the parts you want cleaned. Some treatments are "complete fuel system" cleaners. These will clean all the fuel system components.
    • Most of these cleaners will state on its front label the components it cleans such as "carburetor cleaner." If you cannot tell by the front what it cleans, check the back label for more information.
    • Octane boosters are the only treatments that might improve gas mileage by raising the octane level of regular unleaded gasoline by 10 points giving the vehicle a smoother performance.
  3. Choose the strength of your fuel treatment. There are maintenance formulas and "super-concentrated" formulas to choose from.
    • Lower concentration maintenance formulas are ones you start using right after an oil change or professional fuel system cleaning. These are treatments you can continue to use at every gas fill-up.
    • The high "super-concentrated" formulas are designed to clean difficult deposits in one tank fill-up. These products are designed to be used after a certain amount of mileage.

Tips

  • Follow the product's instructions or your mechanic's advice when determining how often to use the treatments.
  • Using different fuel additives together is not necessary. If several parts of your fuel system needs cleaning, it would be easier and cheaper just to buy a fuel system cleaner.
