Buy a Wii

Do you have your heart set on buying a Wii? There are many ways to go about purchasing one. You can check out electronics stores in person or search online to find the best deal. Keep reading for instructions on buying a Wii.

Steps

  1. Use your phone book first. Call any store that sells video games, game consoles and accessories to game systems.
  2. Ask whether or not any of those stores have one. Ask , "I was wondering if you have any Wiis in stock. If the answer is 'no,' ask "When do you expect to have one?" If one is in stock, go to the store right away. If you are not legally allowed to drive a car by yourself, ask your parents or guardians to drive you to the store right away. Wiis sell very quickly when they are in stock!
  3. Go to some of the stores you know carry Wiis (see tips) and if you are very lucky, there might actually be a Wii there! Otherwise, try to find an employee or a manager and ask them some questions about when they get their Wii shipments.
  4. Return to the stores right before shipping time and ask another employee about shipping again. If they don't know, hang around a little bit in case some get put out on the sales floor.
  5. Be patient and persistent. These are the key to getting the Wii. Be at the store earlier than they expect to get the Wii in case they quickly sell out. They can't guarantee when they will have one. If it comes a little later, keep waiting till one comes in. If a Wii doesn't come in stock, keep calling stores and keep using steps one and two. You will get one eventually.
  6. Wii Trackers. There are also some pretty good wii trackers online that will help you track down a Nintendo Wii and also send you alerts when they become available.

Tips

  • You will most likely want an extra controller once you get your Wii. You can buy one for around $39 but alternatively you can buy "Wii Play" which is a collection of 9 fun games and comes with that extra controller you need!
  • If you can't find one in stores, try buying one on a site like eBay.
  • Target staff in the electronics area may also be instructed to tell any inquiring customers coming in with the DCIP number that the system is wrong. Instead, using the price scanner, check if the Wii is in the stockroom. Then, go directly to guest services and request they bring the item out of the stockroom for you.
  • If you decide to wait in line outside a store, one nice method is using a friend or family member to help you. You each get in line at a different store (make sure both have the money to buy a Wii). The first one to get a Wii, calls the other on a mobile phone (make sure you don't buy two by mistake!).
  • If you're looking for a Wii console at Target, try this: Find a price checker at the end of one of the aisles in Target. Type in 207-25-0001 (this is the Wii's product number). Then press enter. This will tell you if how many Wiis are there and if they are in the stockroom or out on the sales floor. If there are some in the stockroom, wait around a little bit because they should be coming out soon!
  • Target stores often stockpile Wii consoles during the week and then sell them all first thing Sunday morning. Some stores only get a few consoles each week, while some receive dozens. If you ask nicely, a helpful employee can check stock on hand at any store in the area, giving you a good idea of where to go for the best odds. Keep in mind, the demand for Wiis has been immense and frustrated Wii-seekers tend to take it out on empty-handed staff - so be nice!
  • You could also just reserve one and get it the next day.
  • Remember patience and persistence are the keys to getting a Install Homebrew on Your Wii (System Menu 4.0).
  • If you are saving money to get a Wii, trade in games, DVDs, game system accessories, or other game systems you no longer need, but don't trade in your games to Gamestop/Eb games since they will give you next to nothing for your games. You can also trade blu-ray discs you will no longer need. Video game stores don't take DVD or Blu-ray disc players. If you trade in stuff, the video game store will give you a card paying money for trading in. You can only do this in video game stores. Video stores won't take game systems like PS1, N64, Game Boy Color or any game systems older than that. Game stores won't take any games for those systems except for Game Boy Color and regular Game Boy or if its rare. Walmart sells stuff in stores for cheaper than a store normally would. If you have a Nintendo Gamecube, trade in the game system without the controllers and memory cards most places won't take it without at least one working controller. You don't need a Gamecube when you have the Wii. Wiis can play Gamecube games. You will need Gamecube controllers and memory cards in order to play Gamecube games.
  • Here are some stores that sell the Wii consoles:
    • Target
    • Dell
    • Costco
    • Toys "R" Us
    • EB Games
    • BestBuy
    • Sears (K-Mart is affiliated with Sears so, only look on one website. Usually they don't tell you at what stores you can find it!)
    • K-mart
    • Circuit City
    • Walmart
    • Tom Freyer's Warehouse
    • Sam's Club (this is a place OFTEN overlooked)
    • GameStop
    • eCrater (GameStock)
    • Game Crazy
    • Fred Meyer
    • Big W
    • Blockbuster
    • Real Canadian Superstore/Loblaws(they are usually in stock)(Canada only)

Warnings

  • Stay in the store you are in while you are waiting unless you have someone in the store with you. If you have someone to wait for you while you are waiting while looking at stuff at other stores, that won't decrease your chance of getting a Wii.
  • Avoid buying a Wii during holidays where gifts are given, most stores run out.
  • Be aware that the Wii already comes with a nun-chuck, some places might trick you into buying a nun-chuck.
  • Being too persistent may annoy game store employees and have them choose to over look you when selling a system
  • Even though this might still take you a little while to get a Wii, don't give up! The Wii is definitely worth the wait!
  • If you are trying to buy it on eBay, you can't be guaranteed to get one. It may be a scam. You may have better luck with Craigslist. Remember, never send money to pay for a CL item and bring a friend with you when you go to pick it up.
