Be Safe With the Nintendo Wii

Reports have been circulating that Wii Remotes have been flying around, breaking TVs and windows as a result of overly exuberant gameplay. Here is how to protect yourself and your possessions from making this happen to you.

Steps

  1. Always use the safety strap and jacket! Make sure they're put on the Wii Remote tightly. Nintendo didn't make them for fashion; they made it for your protection.
  2. Be on the lookout. Make sure any valuable objects are not nearby. They could break if the Wii Remote flies from your grip.
  3. Mind your distance from the TV. You should be at least {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} away, but the maximum is {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}}. It's better for your eyes, and if the remote goes flying, it is less likely to hit the screen.
  4. Check your Remote. If you bought the Wii before the new straps were installed, or your remote is physically broken (it is dangerous to use now), order a new free strap from Nintendo's website.
  5. Be aware. Keep in mind and be aware what you are doing, and avoid moving from your standing position. If your friends are also playing, remind your friend not to lose his/her head in high-movement games.
  6. Order a Wii remote jacket to reduce the chance of a loss of grip. These are available for free right here.

Warnings

  • If playing co-op, or three-player, or something, make sure you have space.
  • Don't play Wii Sports or other high-movement games with sweaty hands. Your loosened grip will increase the chances of the Wii Remote slipping out of your hands.
  • Be conscious about the force you put into your game. It is your judgment if you think you're swinging too powerful. Normally, you would only have to slightly flick the Wii remote at a fair speed.
  • If your feet or legs get tired, place something soft underneath you and make sure it can't give way under you, like knitted blanket, it takes a lot for one of those to slip.
  • Be careful if others are around! Ask them to step back if they are too close so you don't hit them with the Wii remote.
  • Use the wrist strap unless it is extremely uncomfortable, does not fit on you, or does not work/work well with the accessory you are currently using. You do not want to throw your Wii Remote at your TV by accident.
