Care for Skin After Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion by itself is not a particularly invasive procedure; however, there are some microscopical changes that may irritate your skin. Find out what changes you might experience during and after this procedure, and the best way to address them.

Steps

  1. Always listen to your dermatologist. It's tempting to search for medical information on the internet. However, not every article on the internet can be trusted; misinformation on medical advice can cause harm to others, including you. Your dermatologist will have advice tailored to your medical needs.
  2. Don't touch your treated skin. After the microdermabrasion process, your skin will be very sensitive and weak, so you should avoid picking and scratching your skin. It may be challenging to resist the temptation of scratching it; remind yourself that your skin will heal faster if you avoid picking it.
  3. Avoid sunlight. Stay out of direct sunlight as much as possible, since UV rays can interfere with the recovery process of the skin. If you cannot avoid sunlight due to your occupation or any other reason, make sure you use proper sunscreen. Consult your dermatologist; he/she will suggest the right sunscreen for your skin.
  4. Keep skincare product use to a minimum. After the microdermabrasion treatment, your skin will be very sensitive, so using skincare products (even the ones you typically use) may irritate your skin further and prolong the recovery process. If you scheduled multiple microdermabrasion procedures, you should avoid using any skincare products, other than those your dermatologist might have recommended.
  5. Cool your skin down. After the treatment, your face might feel sore (similar to a sunburn), but you don’t need to worry; this is quite normal. If you find it uncomfortable, just apply some cold water, an ice pack, or an ice cube to your face. This will massage your facial skin and muscles, while simultaneously cooling them down.
  6. Use anti-inflammatory creams. If you notice any skin problems or flare-ups, you can apply an anti-inflammatory cream, along with a gentle facial cleanser.
  7. If the problem persists, seek professional medical help. Your skin will increase in sensitivity, as previously mentioned. It is normal, and it will happen with most patients. It should only last 2-3 days. If you continue to feel discomfort and soreness three days after treatment, you should visit your dermatologist and consult alternative options.
