Care for a Madagascar Dragon Tree

The Madagascar dragon tree (Dracaena marginata) is a very hardy, hard to kill indoor plant. The less you love it, the more it thrives – you can't say that about many things in life! So if you want an indoor plant that you don't have to remember is there very often, here is how to care for it.

Steps

  1. Buy one. Visit the local nursery or garden centre and ask for a Madagascar dragon tree. If they don't have it, see if you can buy one online.
  2. Position it where it's convenient in the home. It prefers bright light but it will also manage being kept away from a window in a darker spot.
    • If the red edges leaves disappear, it's not in enough light. However, the resulting leaves are considered beautiful in themselves as they'll be thinner and prettier. So it's up to you which look you prefer.
  3. Water it moderately during its growth season. During winter, water much less. Don't over water it. If you under water it, you'll see brown leaf tips, which is easily remedied by watering a bit more. It may also be a sign of inadequate humidity, so keep the humidifier on or mist it regularly.
    • Allow the pot to dry out to one third between each watering.
    • Good drainage is essential.
  4. Feed every now and then. It won't keel over if you forget though.

Tips

  • Feel free to shape the tree; it twists and angles with ease. Use braces, bands or twine to hold the branches in a different shape. Or simply twist the branches into shapes that you like.
  • If it's growing too tall, cut off the tops in spring or early summer. New growth tufts will appear soon enough.
  • The bottom leaves shed regularly; this is normal and is not a sign of neglect. Pick them up and throw them away.
  • This plant requires average warmth. No need to put the heater on on account of the plant; you'll need the warmth sooner.
  • This plant is related to lilies. The name comes from the belief that the red gum that comes from the tree when cut appears like dragon's blood.
