Catch Wildlife to Study

Here is how you can catch wildlife easily and without harming the animal. You should already have some collecting equipment such as jars, nets and test tubes.

Steps

  1. Prepare your collecting equipment by writing a list of what you will need. This could consist of: binoculars, a net, test tubes, a guide on the type of animal that you plan on catching, a notebook and pencil, and most importantly, a variety of jars and pots.
  2. Take your equipment with you to somewhere where you know you will see what you are looking for.
  3. Move around carefully and quietly until you see something you would like to study. Approach the animal with your equipment ready and if it is large enough, pick it up carefully and place it in a large box. If it is small, put a leaf in front of it and it should crawl onto it. Place the leaf in a jar and cover the jar with muslin.
  4. Write about the animal and sketch it in your notebook.
  5. Study it closely and handle it with care until you know enough about it.
  6. Set the animal free. Once you have completed your wildlife study, free the animal back where you found it.

Tips

  • Search for information about the animals on the internet or in books before catching them.

Warnings

  • Never touch something which is poisonous or could harm you in any way.
  • Do not harm the animal. If you believe you may inadvertently cause the animal pain, do not attempt to trap it at all.
  • Always free the animal once you have studied it as it may be endangered and all animals and insects should be returned to their environment in the same condition as you found them.
  • Always wash your hands after handling wild animals.
