Change Artboard Size in Adobe Illustrator
Artboards in Adobe Illustrator are the regions of your workspace that contain printable artwork. Each document you create in Illustrator can have multiple artboards in the workspace. You define an artboard's size when you create it, but you can change the size later if necessary. You can enter a new size manually, or you can have the artboard resize itself automatically based on the artwork it contains.

Steps
Resizing an Artboard Manually
- Open your document in Illustrator. You can change the artboard size while the document is open in Illustrator.
- Click the File menu. You'll see the "File" menu in the upper-left corner for both Mac and PC.
- Select "Document Setup." This will open a new window with various options for configuring your current document.
- Click the "Edit Artboards" button. This will display the different artboards you already have in the document, with the first one highlighted.
- Select the artboard you want to change the size of. Use your mouse to highlight the artboard you want to adjust the dimensions for.
- Press .↵ Enter or ⏎ Return to open the "Artboard Options" window. This will display a variety of options for the artboard you had selected.
- Change the size of the artboard. Beneath the artboard name, you can change the dimensions. Click the "Preset" menu to select from a variety of preset sizes, or enter custom dimensions into the Width and Height fields.
- Alternatively, you can click and drag the handles on the edges of the artboard to resize the artboard. These handles only appear after you've clicked "Edit Artboards" button in the Document Setup window. Press Esc after resizing to save your changes.
- If you have multiple artboards, the edges will snap a bit when aligned with neighboring boards when resizing by dragging the handles.
- Click "OK" to save your changes. Your artboard will be resized accordingly.
- Resize your art to fit the new artboard size. If you've increased the size of your artboard, the art inside may not take up the entire board anymore. You can scale the images inside of the artboard so that they fit:
- Select all of the objects in the artboard by pressing Ctrl/⌘ Cmd+A, then press Ctrl/⌘ Cmd+G to group them.
- Hold ⇧ Shift and drag the corner of the selection until the objects have scaled to the proper size. Holding ⇧ Shift ensure that the objects stay proportional.
Resizing an Artboard Automatically to Fit Art
- Open the document in Illustrator. You can resize the artboard based on your art size directly in Illustrator using menu settings.
- Click the Objects menu. If you have piece of created art that extends beyond your artboard, you can have Illustrator resize it automatically to fit correctly.
- Select "Artboards." This will display some additional options in a submenu.
- Select "Fit to Artwork Bounds." This will automatically resize the artboard so that it matches the dimensions of the artwork.
Tips
- The "artboard" is different from your "workspace." The workspace, or "canvas" as it is sometimes referred to, is the space that contains all of you artboards. The workspace in Illustrator is set at 227"x227" and cannot be changed.
