Change Black Ink to Color on a Dell 940 Printer

Changing Black ink to color on any printer usually involves the operating system of the computer that the printer is tied to. This would include most of the major operating systems that are out in the marketplace. This page will be discussing the Windows operating system environment (any flavor i.e Win 95 through Win XP)

Steps

  1. The first step is to get into your computers' control panel, go to the start button on the desk top and click it, then go to settings and click on it and control panel and click on that.
  2. Once you're in control panel you'll see the printers and faxes icon you'll click on that.
  3. You'll then right-click on the icon for your printer (i.e the printers' name and model) and go to properties selection which will bring you to the property sheet.
  4. After that you see (depending on the OS) a number of tabs for that particular printer, usually it will be labeled setup, color management, etc, you'll select this.
  5. The final steps are to select the color radio button instead of the black button and to finally close out all the windows of control panel to get back to the desktop. Now your printer will be printing in color.

Tips

  • You need a colour printer for this to work. A printer with only black ink is only able to print in black and grey. It will NOT print colour no matter how hard you try unless it has colour ink in it. Putting colour ink into a black only printer is a bad idea and may void your warranty if you can actually get the ink in there.
  • If the printer icon is installed on your desktop then you can just right-click it and get to the printers' property sheet much faster, maybe in the future you'd like to make a shortcut to it if you do not have it on the desktop,it makes for easier management of that printer.

Warnings

  • Be careful not to delete your printer by accident, by doing so you'll have to reload the driver for the printer and redo everything for it.
