Change Your Browser's Language

This article teaches you how to change your Internet browser's language. Unfortunately, there isn't a way to change the language in mobile browsers without changing your device's language settings.

Steps

Google Chrome (Desktop)

  1. Open Google Chrome. Chrome is the yellow, red, and green icon with a blue circle in the middle.
  2. Click . This button is in the top-right corner of the Chrome window.
  3. Click Settings. It's near the bottom of the drop-down menu.
  4. Scroll down and click Show advanced settings. This link is at the bottom of the page.
  5. Scroll down and click Language and input settings. It's beneath the "Languages" heading about halfway down the page.
  6. Click Add. This button is in the bottom-left corner of the window.
  7. Click the box beneath the "Add language" heading. This box will have a language's name (e.g., "Afrikaans") written in it.
  8. Click your preferred language. The languages in the drop-down menu here are listed alphabetically, so you'll likely need to scroll down.
  9. Click OK. Doing so will add the selected language to your Google Chrome's "Languages" menu.
  10. Click Display Google Chrome in this Language. This button is in the top-right side of the "Languages" window.
    • You can also check the boxes next to "Use this language for spell checking" and "Offer to translate pages in this language" to apply your selected language to all of Chrome.
  11. Click Done. It's on the bottom-right side of the "Language" window. After you close and re-open Google Chrome, your language settings will take place.

Firefox (Desktop)

  1. Open Firefox. This icon resembles a fox wrapped around a blue globe.
  2. Click . It's in the top-right corner of the Firefox window.
  3. Click Options. This is the gear-shaped icon in the middle of the drop-down window.
  4. Click Content. It's a tab on the top-left side of the page.
  5. Click Choose to the right of the "Languages" heading. This option is at the bottom of the page.
  6. Click Select a language to add. It's near the bottom of the "Languages" window.
  7. Scroll down and click a language. Doing so will select it.
  8. Click Add. It's to the right of your selected language, which is now in the "Select a language to add" field at the bottom of the window.
  9. Click OK. This option is on the bottom of the window. Clicking it will apply your new language to Firefox, though you'll first need to close and re-open Firefox.
    • Only pages that support your selected language will change when you re-open Firefox.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Click the Win button. It's in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
  2. Type "control panel" into the search bar. The search bar is at the bottom of the Start window.
  3. Click Control Panel. It should be at the top of the Start window.
  4. Click Add a language. This link is beneath the "Clock, Language, and Region" heading.
  5. Click Add a language. It's below the "Change your language preferences" heading at the top of the page.
  6. Click a language. Since the languages on this page are organized alphabetically, you'll likely have to scroll down.
  7. Click Open. It's in the bottom-right corner of the window.
    • If your selected language doesn't have any supported dialects, this option will say Add instead.
  8. Click a dialect if prompted. While some languages won't have this option, most support at least two or more variations from the base language.
  9. Click Add. It's at the bottom-right corner of the window.
  10. Click Move up. You'll see this option to the right of the "Add a language" option near the top of the window.
    • You may need to click this button a couple of times to move the language all the way to the top of the list of languages.
  11. Close Control Panel. Once you restart your computer and open Microsoft Edge, your language changes will take place.

Internet Explorer

  1. Open Internet Explorer. Its icon resembles a blue "e" with a yellow ring around it.
  2. Click ⚙️. It's in the top-right corner of the Internet Explorer window.
  3. Click Internet Options. This option is at the bottom of the drop-down window.
  4. Click Languages. It's at the bottom of the "Internet Options" window.
    • If you don't see this option, make sure you're on the "General" tab of Internet Options.
  5. Click Set language preferences. It's near the top of the Internet Options window.
  6. Click Add a language. It's below the "Change your language preferences" heading at the top of the page.
  7. Click a language. Since the languages on this page are organized alphabetically, you'll likely have to scroll down.
  8. Click Open. It's in the bottom-right corner of the window.
    • If your selected language doesn't have any supported dialects, this option will say Add instead.
  9. Click a dialect if prompted. While some languages won't have this option, most support at least two or more variations from the base language.
  10. Click Add. It's at the bottom-right corner of the window.
  11. Click Move up. You'll see this option to the right of the "Add a language" option near the top of the window.

  12. Close Internet Explorer. Once you re-open the browser, your language changes will take place.

Opera (Desktop)

  1. Open Opera. This browser's icon resembles a red "O".
  2. Click Menu. It's in the top-left corner of the page.
  3. Click Settings. This option is near the bottom of the drop-down menu.
  4. Click Browser. It's below the "Settings" heading near the top-right side of the page.
  5. Scroll down and click Preferred languages. This option is below the "Languages" heading about halfway down the page.
  6. Click Add Language. This button is in the bottom-left corner of the window.
  7. Click the box beneath the "Add language" heading. This box will have a language's name (e.g., "Afrikaans") written in it.
  8. Click your preferred language. The languages in the drop-down menu here are listed alphabetically, so you'll likely need to scroll down.
  9. Click OK. Doing so will add the selected language to your Opera browser's "Languages" menu.
  10. Click and drag your language to the top of the list. Doing so will make it your preferred language for any pages that support the language.
  11. Click Done. It's the blue button in the bottom-right corner of the window. Once you restart your Opera browser, you'll see your selected language on any pages that support it.
