Change Your Keyboard from American to English

This article teaches you how to change the keyboard language on your computer or device to U.K. (British) English.

Steps

On Windows 10

  1. Open the Start menu. It's the Windows logo in the lower-left corner of the screen.
  2. Click on Settings. It's next to a gear (⚙️) icon on the left side of the screen.
  3. Click on Time & language. It's on the left side of the window.
  4. Click on Region & language. It's in the left pane of the window.
  5. Click on English (United Kingdom. It's in the alphabetically-ordered list in the right pane of the window.
  6. Click on Options. It's in the lower-right part of the window.
  7. Click on Add a keyboard.
  8. Click on a keyboard style. Choose from UK AZERTY, UK QWERTZ, or UK QWERTY.
    • Press the "Windows" key and the spacebar to toggle between languages on your keyboard.

On Windows 7

  1. Open the Start menu. It's in the lower-left corner of the screen.
  2. Click on Control Panel.
  3. Click on Clock, Language, and Region.
  4. Click on Regional and Language Options. It's on the left side of the window.
  5. Click on Keyboards and Languages. It's a tab at the top of the window.
  6. Click on Change keyboards….
  7. Click on Installed services. It's a tab at the top-left of the window.
  8. Click on Add…. It's on the right side of the window.
  9. Click on ⊞-English (United Kingdom). The language options are in alphabetical order.
  10. Click on ⊞-Keyboard. It appears below "English (United Kingdom)" when you expand the menu.
  11. Check "□ United Kingdom." It's just beneath "⊟-Keyboard."
  12. Click on OK. It's in the upper-right corner of the screen. British English is now one of your keyboard languages.
    • Press the ALT and Shift keys to toggle between keyboard languages.

On Mac

  1. Click on the Apple menu. It's the  icon in the upper-left of your screen.
  2. Click on System Preferences. It's near the top of the menu.
  3. Click on Keyboard. It's in the middle of the dialog box.
  4. Click on Input Sources…. It's a tab at the top of the dialog box.
  5. Click on . It's beneath the left pane of the dialog box.
  6. Click on English. It's in the left pane of the dialog box.
  7. Click on 🇬🇧British. It's in the right pane of the dialog box.
  8. Click on Add. It's in the lower-right corner of the dialog box.
  9. Check "□ Show Input menu in menu bar." It's near the bottom of the dialog box.
    • Click on the flag icon on the right side of the menu bar, at the top of the screen, then click on 🇬🇧British to set the keyboard language on your Mac.

On iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings. It's a gray app that contains gears (⚙️) and is typically found on your Home screen.
  2. Scroll down and tap General. It's in one of the sections near the top of the menu next to a gray gear (⚙️) icon.
  3. Scroll down and tap Keyboard. It's near the bottom of the menu.
  4. Tap Keyboards. It's at the top of the menu.
  5. Tap Add New Keyboard…. It's the last section on the screen.
  6. Scroll down and tap English (UK). It's in the "OTHER IPHONE KEYBOARDS" section of the menu.
  7. Tap Edit. It's in the upper-right corner of the screen.
  8. Tap and hold . It's to the right of "English (UK)."
  9. Drag "English (UK)" to the top of the menu. This makes it the default keyboard on your iPhone.
  10. Tap Done. It's in the upper-right corner of the screen.
    • Tap 🌐 in the lower-left corner of a keyboard to toggle between keyboard layouts and languages.

On Android

  1. Open Settings. It's an app that's shaped like a gear (⚙️) and is usually found on your Home screen.
  2. Scroll down and tap 🌐 Languages & input. It's in the "Personal" section of the menu.
    • On Samsung devices, first tap General management and then tap Languages and input.
  3. Tap Virtual Keyboard.
    • On older versions of Android, instead find the "Keyboard and input methods" section on the "Languages and input" page.
  4. Tap on the keyboard you wish to change. This will take you to the settings page for the selected keyboard.
  5. Tap Languages.
    • For the Samsung keyboard tap Languages and types.
  6. Slide "Use system language" to the "Off" position. It's at the top of the screen and will turn gray.
    • For the Samsung keyboard you will not have this option.
  7. Slide "English (UK)" to the "On" position. It's near the top of the "Active input methods" section and will turn blue.
    • For the Samsung keyboard, first tap Add input languages and then tap the blue download arrow next to English(UK). Once downloaded, slide the switch next to English(UK) in the "Downloaded languages" section to the right and it will turn blue.
  8. Tap the "Back" arrow. It's in the upper-left corner of the screen.
  9. Tap the "Back" arrow. It's in the upper-left corner of the screen.
  10. Open the keyboard. You can do this by navigating to any place where you can type. You can open your text messaging app, start an email, or even start typing in the google search bar, anywhere that will cause the keyboard to pop-up.
  11. Tap and hold on the space bar.
    • You can also tap the 🌐 key to the left of the space bar to automatically switch to the next language input.
  12. Tap English(UK).
    • On the Samsung keyboard, while still holding down the space bar, swipe right or left to select English(UK).
