Change the Keyboard Language of a Mac

Need to type in another language on your Mac? You can change the input language of your keyboard to a wide variety of languages, and you can switch between them with a few clicks or keystrokes. You can also have multiple languages enabled, allowing you to switch back and forth whenever you choose.

Steps

  1. Click the Apple menu and select System Preferences.
  2. Click Keyboard.
  3. Click the Input Sources tab.
  4. Click the "+" button to search for languages to add.
  5. Check the box for each input source you want to use. You can add multiple input sources.
  6. Check the "Show Input menu in menu bar" box. A flag icon representing the current input will appear in the menu bar.
  7. Click the flag to change input languages. You'll be able to quickly select from any of the input sources you've checked.
  8. Use keyboard shortcuts to change between languages.
    • Command + Space - Switch to previous input language
    • Command + Option + Space - Switch to next input language

Tips

  • If the keyboard shortcuts open Spotlight Search instead, return to the Input Sources tab of the "Language & Text" menu. Click the button and then select "Spotlight Search". Uncheck the boxes and then select "Keyboard & Text Input". Check the "Select the previous input source" and "Select the next source in Input menu" boxes.
