Change Your Singing Voice

You can't necessarily change your voice, but you can change how you sing. If you used to sing very high and you believe you sound very "childish" - there is a simple way to lower your voice.

Steps

  1. Realize that your voice changes on its own. Male voices typically change from ages 12 to 15, and female voices do not tend to mature fully until the early thirties. [1]
  2. Identify your singing voice. Do you sing better with high notes, or low notes?
    • If you sing better with high notes, the best thing to do is to practice singing songs that have low notes. You can go down a few octaves until you reach one that you are not comfortable singing. This means that you should go up one octave and practice using that sound. Both male and female voices will change in sound from singing high notes to singing low notes
    • If you sing better with low notes: do the complete opposite of the above step. The only thing with low voices is that you can strain the vocal chords if you make a big jump up to high notes very fast. It is better to start small and work your way up.
  3. Always warm up your voice before you start to sing. [2]
  4. Start by training your voice by singing along with an artist. This will give you a kind of "backup" while you're learning a new sound.
  5. Use instrumental or karaoke videos to practice on your own. It is key that you learn to sing on your own, and it helps you develop your own style.
  6. Throw in a few "fun" notes. These are the notes that artists such as Christina Aguilera and R&B singers use. These help train the vocal chords, and exercise them.
  7. Don't worry about sounding bad at first. When you are training your voice to do something opposite than what it wants to do it will be kind of hard.
  8. Drink plenty of water while you practice.

Tips

  • Record yourself singing every once in a while to see if you like the sound.
  • Do vocal warm ups.
  • Don't eat or drink anything like pineapple before singing because this is said to be bad for the voice.

Warnings

  • DO NOT start singing without first warming up your voice. This can seriously damage your vocal chords.
