Change a Water Filter in a Kenmore Refrigerator

Modern Kenmore refrigerators have a water filter that helps the refrigerator tap dispense filtered water. Owning 1 of these refrigerators will require you to replace the water filter from time to time, in order to keep the water fresh and the refrigerator running efficiently. Kenmore refrigerators are made by Amana, Frigidaire, GE, LG, and Whirlpool, so it is important to find out which manufacturer made your Kenmore refrigerator, in order to make sure you order the right part. Kenmore refrigerators use filters that are located in the bottom, front panel of the refrigerator. This article will tell you how to change a water filter in a Kenmore refrigerator.

Steps

  1. Locate the manufacturer of the Kenmore refrigerator, to find the model part number. You can find this in the refrigerator manual, or by doing some online research.
  2. Order your part online or by calling the number in the manual that is recommended for Kenmore replacement filters. A number of water filtration brands, like Pur and Brita may be available to you.
  3. Take the filter out of the box, and remove the caps on the end of the filter. These are placed there for shipping. They are often made with a bright color so that you can distinguish them from the filter.
  4. Get down on the floor with the filter, so that you are at eye level with the grille on the front bottom of the refrigerator.
  5. Push the release button that is next to a circular cap on the grille. The filter should release.
  6. Pull the filter out of the grille.
  7. Turn the grille cap counterclockwise to remove it from the old filter.
  8. Place the grille cap on the same place on the new water filter and turn it clockwise.
  9. Make sure the words on the filter are facing the right side up and place the new filter inside the grille.
  10. Push it into the grille until it clicks into place.
  11. Flush the filter out to avoid creating an airlock.
    • Place a bucket below the tap and press it for 5 seconds and release it for 5 seconds. Repeat this procedure until the water begins to flow, and then continue for 2 minutes.
  12. Use your Kenmore refrigerator water tap.

Tips

  • Change your water filter every 6 months to keep your water fresh.
  • If your water filter does not work after trying to flush it, make sure the shipping caps have been taken off. If it still doesn't work, you may have a frozen water line or a bad water valve, in which case you will need to call a repairman.

Warnings

  • An airlock can ruin your new filter. Make sure to flush the new filter, or it may never work properly.
